Another Appeal To Move Against Invader
Canton, June 18.
Generals Chen Chi-tang. Li Chung-jen and Pai Chung-hsi sent a strongly worded telegram to General Chiang Kai-shek to-day regretting that the South-west's anti-Japanese expedi- tion is misunderstood by the Central Government and reaffirm- ing that no ulterior motives are behind the despatch of troops to Hunan.
"
"The object of the mobilisation was to set an example to the nation that anti-Japanese resistance policy must be put into action. The more is entirely against foreign aggression, and we not only had no thought of civil strife but are firmly op- posed to any form of civil warfare.
*It is true that some troops were despatched to Huñan, but the Central Government order was still awalted for the north- ward 'march. However, as the Central Government could" nut see the viewpoint of the South-west, we will voluntarily with: draw our forces back" to within the "Kwangtung and Kwangsi border."
The telegram earnestly urges armed resistance against Japan. declaring that such a step is the only way to
preserve existence. and deploring the fact that al- though the national enemy is in the North the Central Government forces should move in a south- west direction
Finally the message appeals to the Generalissimo to respect public opinion and lead the country to fight the invaders.
The telegram is generally re- garded as significant as this is the first time that the South-west military leaders replied to General Chiang Kai-shek direct since the trouble began on June 2-uter PEACE MOVES DENIED
