YOUNG SCOTS IN LONDON

Work Of Caledonian Christian, Club

LORD STONEHAVEN'S

TRIBUTE

London, May 18.

A striking tribute to the value of the work done by the Caledonian Christian Club for young Scots in London was paid by Lord Stone- haver to-day whan he moved the adoption of the club's 49th report ot the annual meeting.

The Marqus of Aberdeen, presl- dent of the club, presided.

Lord, Stonehaven 'said that no Scat whose "duties carried him to different parts of the Empire, and who had opportunities of see.nt not only what the Empire contri- butes to Scotsmen but also what Scotsmen contribute to the Em- pire, could fail to rejoice at the Opportunity of taking part in a gathering such Us the annual meeting of the" Caledonian Chris- tian Club,

PART IN EMPIRE BUILDING The annual stocktaking or the work of one of those institutions which go to preserve the character of Scotsmen after they leave their own country-nothing could be more important than that. They nad no reason, as Scotsmen. to be ashamed of the part which their fellow countrymen played in building up and maintaining the Empire.

NO matter what part of the Empire it was, if there were even two Scotsmen in It there was sure to be a Caledonian Soc.ety or a St. Andrew's Society. No man "in the whole of Australia had got sc many statues to his memory 23 Robert Burns, and anything more Scottish than the St. Andrew's Day gatherings in Melbourne or Sydney it was impossible to im- agine.

"You don't know anything about Scotsmen," he continued, "till you tave seen men who left Scotland 70 or 80 years ago, but who retair. their accent in a way that maker you think they have just come cut from Glasgow,'

There was one particular item i the great St. Andrew's Day gather- ings in Sydney which had im- pressed him very much. They hac, their "hundred pipers and a' parading the ground, but at cer- tain points they had posts stuck up with the names of three or four adjoining Scottish count es On them 30 that anybody came from these counties only to atand there for a wee while, and sure enough some one who

from the same would join them."
