Schiaparelli has inaugurated neat outline, untroubled by trills and other extraneous trimmings. Her tailored skirts are short and slim. She uses zipper fastenings

up the front of one skirt and the same for bodices and jackets. On other jackets the buttons are in the shape of little lanterns, or in some other quaint design The waistline of many short coats is slightly pinched, the basques are fiat.

Russet-brown is a colour used for... apollen and lnen dresses. Now and then a flower is put with a simple tailored frock or coat and skirt, as when she sets a red rose on a blue linen dress. With a wine- coloured coat and skirt goes a light figured blouse, with one in prune- red goes a blouse of pale blue. A three-quarter length coat may have Italian quilting on the shoul- ders. or at leather trimming rather like nursery harness. A tar- tan silk dress is worn under a long plain Coat Necklines are collar- less. Hats are easy to wear, whether with narrow brims or wide. They are trimmed at the back." The hairdressing which goes with them is the chignon, and Schiaparelli puts this into a net. Vells are thus not necessary.

EVENING LINE

For the evening the line of the dresses in Greek. Made in one col- our with a border of another col- our, these dresses hang gracefully. A bandeau is worn about the head, the colour being determined by the dress. A plain crêpe bandeau may have a trimming of flat fo- wers, a black velvet one has glis- tening embroidery in relief.

Paquin has a rich collection of" summer dresses for day and even- fag wear. The line of the "skirts is slim, and among afternoon dresses the tuhic is frequent. There is a great deal. of white allied to colour or black, as when the dress is in white linen or marocain, and a loose-fittting little Jacket is in black silk with a belt to match. and a bunch of blue cornflowers is set at the neckline. A white shan- tung dress for sunbathing is fitted with a short cape in rusty-red finen with a belt to match. Bright- figured jackets go with lim white dresses, and black and white figured dresses invariably have a belt or sath of something vivid. Varnished linen figured with flowers is used to make dresseu". and to trim plain materials. Bro- derie Anglaise is in fashion for summer dresses, one being in white 10 be, worn under a long brown crepa marocain coat with a bag in brown and white.

LONG AND SLEM Evening dresses are long and slim, with all the fullness gather-:: ed about the knees and feet. In fine net and lace, in embroidered net. In lace, in softly coloured satin, these dresses are lovely. They have short sleeves and are cut low back and front. The waist is slight- ly higher in front than at the back. Short draped capes of suble are worn with them.

Robert Piguet makes his dressees with fullness behind, starting from the waist and widening near the hem. For summer he is using · a great deal of linen_crepe, pique, shantung. Many of the dresses are figured, some have dark grounds, others light. He puts flowers in a cluster at the neck of a little linen frock. His jackets, white, black and white, figured or 'plain, full, tight-fitting, short or long, for day and for evening, offer the widest choice.

AT THE VEIL COUNTERS

Although the new vell nets are clear to a degree, there is a great variety of design, from the stiffened half-inch vide mesh with pattern, to the tiny open Ane nets in small designs. It is best to avoid too striking a net, for, the veil should be sensed as an enhancement to the features, rather than" being too obvious.

It is a different matter when It is a stand-away affair that is part of the Hat. Then the mesh is used as a decorative adorn- ment to millinery, and the sti strasse bordez designs are ef- fective.

No vell should ever be worn once it has become dashed by the rain or wear. To be fresh and crisp, fluted and fascinat- ing, is the sole aim of its but- terfly existence.
