NO PREFERENCE FOR ITALY A

Suez Canal authorities in London would not comment to-day on the report from Paris that Italy is asking for lower passage rates.

The request, it has been suggest- ed, la, based on the assumption that Italy will now be one of the canal's principal users, because of her development of Abyssinia.

Inquiries. in Paris. however. showed that in no circumstances would Italy receive special rates.

It would be against the canal company's policy, which has al- ways beeni to avoid giving pre- ference to any particular hat'on.

The Abyssinian delegate. Mr. Wolde Mariam. was invited to 'attend. He entered the room and was asked to go up to the table.

Thereupon Baron Alots, in icy tones, said:

"I cannot admit the presence of the so-called delegate of Ethiopia. There is no semblance of an organisation of a State in Ethiopia.

"The only Power in Ethiopla is the Italian. "Any discussions on the subject of the so-called dis- pute would therefore be vain.

"I. therefore, shall not take part in any such discussions." Then he walked out.

After Baron Alo'st's outburst the Abyssinian delegate replied "Abys- sinia is the victim of aggression. Abyssinlä has violated no treaties or covenants. She is still firmly attached to the League."

The Italian Government formally stated last night (according to the Exchange from Rome) its decision not to attend the Geneva meetings as long as other persons insisted on representing Ethiopia at the League of Nations,
