As regards recruiting, we have been asking the Commandant to concentrate for the present on static machine gunners and the battery. I need not give you the reason why, but I will make it clear that it is not because we un- der-estimate the efficiency or utility of other Sub-units. The recruit- ment of Indian Signallers into the 20

Corps is a welcome step and should 8/9 $12.50 add to the efficiency of the 'Signal Unit. I am glad to see that some of the recruits are here to-night.

As regards the Anti-Aircraft Gunners, many claims were put ct. forward for successes during the Combined Operations. This year it.will be interesting to see whether they are equally successful in hit- ting dummy aeroplanes on the rifle ranges with ball ammunition.
