MR. G. B. SHAW DECLINES
Profitable Refusal
Birmingham, Apr. 30. Excavations have for some time been taking place at Weoley Castle. qa historic ruin on a Birmingham Corporation housing estate, and the immediate surroundings, of the castle are being beautined and preserved as an open space.
When the corporatino appealed for funds to carry on the work of excavation and preservation" a let- ter was sent to Mr. Bernard Shaw. His reply, written in red ink across the original letter of appeal, was read at a meeting at Birmingham Council House to-day. He wrote:
old "Better, sell the
place to somebody in America:, I have no influence in Birmingham, There the dozens of leading citizens who can afford the needed money much can. Besides, if better than I Birmingham does not want the castle why should I interfere?"
A suggestion was made that the letter should be auctioned, and it, A. S. finally went to Councillor Giles at ten guineas. Five guineas bid by the Crescent Theatre of the Municipal Players were also added " to the fund, which thus benefited to the extent of £15, 15s, from Mr. Shaw's refusal.
