The Police have proved invaluable

During the past two or three seasons. there has been a slow but perceptible increase of enthusiasin among the tennis section of the Kowloon Cricket Club. Pay a visit to the K.C.C. ground on any after- noon of the week and note the activity. Whereas a short while ago, four courta would sufice, nowadays twice that number stl leaves enthusiasts clamouring for more to be prepared. In the lea- gues, this keenness has made itself manifest. From languishing con- sistently near the bottom of the Isbles, all teams have made con- siderable advances and last season

was probably the most successful ever experienced by the Club, not only in the league positions but by the number of teams entered.

To what can one attribute this revival? To my mind it is due to the reorganisation of the tennis gub... committee. This body has always been in existence but to A large extent all the work of running the teams fell on one man. It stands to reason that this, at best, is a most unsatisfactory situation and the present system, whereby one member of the committee is res- ponsible for one team is far and away the best solution.

In connection with L/C. Peter's victory it must be pointed out that he actually tied with Lt. Patturo, of the Royal Engineers, with an akgregate of 128 scored out of a possible 140. The two men sport- ingly agreed to toss the coin, and L/C Peters was successful.

PRESIDENT'S SPEECH

Major Walker said:-

The first annual prise meeting of the Hong Kong Rifle Association has lasted five days and will con Clude this afternoon. It has con- formed in every possible way with the organisation avalling and in e at the Imperial meeting at Bisley. We trust that this meeting will be the fore-runner of many others. (Hear. Hear).

The encouragement which your Excellency has given us both by your presence here to-day and the presentation of such a magnificent cup should give a tremendous fllly to rifle shooting in Hong Kong.

Rifts shooting is " a sport which is of immense Import- ance, not only for the spirit of comradeship it engenders but for its practical value in de fence. The Hong Kong Rifle Association was born last year and this lusty youth has grown very rapidly, now having a membership, or 330 full members and 6.100 amliated mem bere. (Hear Hear) It is now the largest rifle shooting organisa- tion in the Empire and is amilated with the National Rifle

cessful conclusion,

The organisation of a Bisley a tremendous meeting involves amount of hard work backed up by expert knowledge and I am sure the rest of the Council of this or Fanisation are with me when I ascribe the success of this meeting to the, efforts of Major Steers, our honorary secretary. He has been instrumental in galvanising and organising a moribund sport into a flourishing rifle association and the amount of midnight oil he has burned up in the process is evi- dence of the magnitude of his task.

We are pleased to welcome our many guests and appreciate your Excellency's co-operation in plac- ing the

valuable sport of rifle shooting in Hong Kong on the armest possible foundations. (Ap- plause).
