IMPERIAL AIRWAYS FINE RECORD
Tributes Paid In House Of Commons
The Under Secretary of State for Air (Sir Philip Sassoon), introducing the air estimates before the House of Commons, last month said Imperial Airways would continue to be the main, if not the sole, instrument for the development of British air transport.
"I suppose," he said. "it is com- mon ground that the objective of air transport is to convey by air. on the most economic basis pos- sible, the maximum amount Of mails, passengers, and "freight. If that be so, ton mileage flown, in "relation to subsidy, must be the soundest criterion of progress. On that basis, the achievement of Imperial Airways is very satisfac- tory.
"Their subsidy last year was it- tle more than one-third of that enjoyed by their French, and about two-thirds of that paid to their Italian competitors. I do not memtion "the comparative figures for the Dutch, because, in addition to their direct subsidy. they receive an indirect postal vubsidy,

"My fourth point is one which is hardly open to argument, and that is the undesirability of dis- sipating public and private money and effort over a number of com- peting undertakings instead concentrating them to the best advantage. Surely the lessons learned by such painful and costly experience in almost every other field of transport and communcia- tlons must apply also to the air.
But, though we are convinced that our policy is basically sound. we do not want the House to think that we are not fully alive to the

Lord Semp.ll, who recently esta- blished a record for ultra-light aeroplanes when he dew non-stop from Croydon to Berlin in little more than eleven hours, lowered the record on the returTI fight, which he accomplished in nine hours.
A sxty-mile-an-hour gale was blowing some of the time. He landed in a field near Canterbury, and called on some friends.
Lord Sempill's machine is a B.A.C. Drone, which is a combina- tion of glider and plane. It is fit- ted with a specially adapted Dou- gas motor-cycle engine develop- ing nineteen h.p.
On the journey to Berlin petrol and of costs totalled 15s. The re- turn trip costs clipped a little off that sum
"I averaged forty-five returning." sald Lord Sempill. "Crossing the Channel I had to come close to the surface, owing to the bar con- ditions."
Lord Sempti's midget plane was "described by Germany's Foreign M.nister. Baran von Neurath, as "a Httle ambassador of peace."
