Addis Ababa, April 22.

The Salale region between Addis Ababa and Gojjam province, Was bombed and gassed by Italian aviators on Monday as well as on Tuesday. The Abyssinians so far have been able to hold their positions.

Foreign press correspondents in Debra Birhan have been ad- vised to return to Addis Ababa by the Abyssinian High Command. The majority of the correspondents, however, preferred to stay in Debra Birhan for the time being, since they belleve that the Italian advance will proceed much slower than had originally been expected.

The Abyssinians apparently were able to offer serious resistance to the Italians. A report describing the events preceding the capture of Dessie by the Italiana which has been received here from Debra Birhan, declares that the Amharic regulars serving in the Abyssinian army went over to the Itallans and killed 20 men of the Crown Prince's bodyguard during the night, The fact that he could no longer rely on the loyalty of the troops at his disposal, so reports assert. caused the Crown Prince to evacuate the strongly fortifed city without offer- ing serious resistance.
