QUEEN. MARY'S MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATION
London, April 21. Queen Mary has sent a personal message of congratulation to the buliders of the Cunard-White Star
The remarkable growth north of for Border of enthusiasm the amateur ucting is the subject of an article by Mr. Norman Bruce in the current number of the quarterly "Scotland." Nine years ago, when the Scottish Community Drama Association was formed, there were 35 entries for its festival; this year
there are 386, and that figure takes no account of the activity that goes
on outside the association's ranks. The amateur stage has a strong hold on English affection, but in proportion to population the appeal of the paint and the powder to the Scot is much stronger than to his neighbour. Some observers of Scot dish life see in this the flowering of an instinct that was sternly re- pressed between the days of Knux and our own, and hint that had not play-acting been for so Inng accounted a wickedness Scotland might not have been limited to pro- ducing between the Reformation and the advent of Sir James Barrie only one play of distinction (and that doubtful) in Home's "Douglas." The present passion for acting has as yet made little or no impression on the commercial stage, The amateur appears to be content with his own activities, and a profitable business has grown up in provid- ing him with one-act plays. The two-thousandth amateur perform ance of one of these was lately re- corded, and Mr. Bruce reckons that it must have brought its author £1,000, in royalties. But there are

As the beast came to the surface from time to time two or three big humps could be seen.
Anxious to get a closer view of the monster, the occupants of the hoat hauled down sall and made. for the spot where the humps ap- Peared, by utilising the boat's en- gine. But they were unable to get to close quarters as the beast made off too quickly for them,

It was one of the first efforts at an international Social Club in Hong Kong and as such I have been very anxious for its success. But, as you know, it has had a struggle for existence and only the keen enthusiasm of a few Chinese and European supporters enabled the Club to turn the corner and achieve" its present renewed prosperity."
Sir Thomas Southorn spoke thas, when together with Lady Southern he was present at the Sports Club fast evening at an Informal farewell party. Sir Thomas in the course of a pleasant speech said that he and Lady Southorn were sorry to leave Hong Kong and their many friends, but these partings were inevit- able.
