ACID THROWING AFFAIR

Man Commended

Imprisonment for five years was imposed on Chan Fai, 45, hawk- er, by the Acting Chief Justice (Mr. Justice Lindsell at the Cri- minal Sessions yesterday for hav ing thrown acid over a woman with intent to do her grievous bodily harm.

The crime was described by Mr. Justice Lindsell as a dastardy and cowardly.one.

The jury empanelled for the hearing comprised Messrs, R. EFS- tonj! (forerian), C. A. Olson, Ho Chung-chow, Yip Bank-key, A. C Comes G. J. Grover and Chan Kiu-lu.

According to the Crown Prosecu-" tor (Mr. E. H. Williams) the wo- man in the case was Yip Lin, who had previously lived with Chan as his mistress. There were frequent quarrels between them and they soon separated.

"Soon after, they separated," said Mr. Willams, "the couple met in. the street where it was alleged Chan had made a very significant remark, stating 'Mind out for your- sed next time you go out."

The next time they met was on February 16 when Ylp was walking along Pennington Street, Wanchal. She heard someone approach her from behind and then felt liquid
