GAS CASUALTIES AMONG THE ABYSSINIANS

Ludicrous Suggestion In

Italian Paper

London, April 11.

There is no surprise in London at the wildly irresponsible ac- cusations printed by Signor Gayda in the "Giornale d'Italia" `re- garding the supply of poison gas to the Abyssinians from British on Great Britain Experience of Italian press attacks sources. during the past year had prepared opinion for the latest and most ludicrous example.

The explanation of reported ras casualties among the Abys». sinians by the suggestion that they were the result of inexpert, attempts by the Abyssinians to use against the Italians chemicals supplied by named subsidiaries of the British firm of Imperial Chemical Industries ready curiously in conjunction with the fact to which the British Foreign Secretary drew attention at the meeting of the Committee of Thirteen that the Hakan Government has declared 259 tons of poison gas in transit through the Suez Canal.

Imperial Chemical Industries has considered it desirable, how- ever, to state that the allegations concerning supplying of poison gas to the Abyssinians are false in all respects so far as it is concerned.

It is understood that the com- ..panies named by Signor Gayda either do not exist or are uncon- nected with Imperial Ch mica In- dustries.

BE STRENGTHENED

Question Of Dardanelles Fortification

London. April,11.

The Foreign Office to-day received a copy of the Turkish Dardanelles note which was addressed to a signatories of the Dardanelles Convention and the annexed Treaty of Lausanne. The British attitude is not likely to be known until after Easter. The note refers to the changed situation in Europe from both political and military viewpoints s'nce the Convention was signed in 1923 and says that the political crisis made it clear that the present machinery 'for collective guarantees were too slow in coming into operation.

4:

It declares that the present status of the Dardanelles does not enable Turkey, In the event of a threat of war, to provide her legitimate defence. She is therefore prepared to negotiate with a view to early agreement for regulation of the regime of the Straits under conditions which secure inviolability of Turkey's territory and in the most helpful spirit for consequent develop- ment of commercial navigation between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea-Reuter.
