AIR MAIL POLICY GREAT MEDICAL
NEW POST OFFICE CONTRACTS
Long Terms And Lumpsum Payments
R
London, Mar. 17.
The new system of dispatching external malls by air without sur- charge, which will begin this morning with the departure of the first load of air mail from London to Denmark and Sweden, marks an important change in Post Of- fice polley both in relation to the public and to the air transport operators. Eltherto only internal malls have been sent by air with
all these out aurcharge, and in enses the Post Office has given the carriers only yearly contracts," and for the carriage on a has paid poundage basis. The new contracta for European air mails are now being let for longer terms under arrangements for the payment of "lump sums annually in return for the right to load mails up to cer- tal weights in the aircraft.
This system applies to the" dally service of British Airways, which will receive, its first load of mails at Heston this morning and will henceforward receive daily loads for carriage to Copenhagen and Malme. It is expected that the daily load will amount to about 1,000lb. These mails, posted over- night in London and the nearer provincial towns, will be delivered in Copenhagen the following even- ing; and, going on by train from Malmo, will reach Stockholm the succeeding morning. Under exist ing arrangements nothing will be gained in dispatching these over- night mails to Hamburg by air, but it is likely that British Airways will later operate a night mail ser- vice, and in that case the incru- sion of Hamburg malls will be
justified
LETTERS TO BERLIN
The principle will be extended in the middle of next month to cover the carriage of malls between Lon- don and Berlin, In this case a night "mall service will be operated by Imperial Airways under a work- ing agreement with the Deutsche Lufthansa. Here, again the Post- Office will pay a lump sum annual- ly to Imperial Airways under an agreement for a term
ed for the return journeys.
DISCOVERY
A Cure For Pernicious Anaemia
น
London, March 15. Investigators of the Medical Research Council, after tests, have confirmed the discovery of a cure for pernicious anaemia, a disease which as recently as ten years ago was considered incurable,
The discovery has been largely due to Dr. H. D. Dakin a Londoner who had settled in the United States, but returned to this coun- try to perfect his researches and experiments.
