The deceased was a widow aged 55 years of age, and prior to her death was in charge of a puffed rice and fire wood shop, previously owned by her husband, Mak Fai Ki. Her husband died in May, 1935 and it was known that the shop was not doing so well for some months prior to the crime.
The prosecution would show that in actual fact, ́the deceased had made some attempts to buy a share in a money changer's shop in Hong Kong, and had paid over some money towards a $200 share f. the shop.
