Many Foreign Influences
MARCH 27, 1936.
PRE-VIEW
To spring and early summer styles various foreign. influences have contributed,

ries, uses soft materials for her. long white or sable draperies, rich but sparse trimmings, and strong. colours, such as moss green, pur- ple. faming yellow, royal blue. Bracelets, earrings, and belts of ivory, silver, and gold are worn with her long evening draperies. The austerity of afternoon black and white is scarcely relieved by the Ivory rings through which draperies are threaded and con- fined. Of gaudily striped cottons and varnished silk straw fine as muslin are dresses and veils for bun-bathing.
Schiaparelli surrounds bouquets of flowers with Valentine frills; rufies and ruching edge skirts which imperfectly hide fully frill- ed petticoats. Bowler hats go Jackets with close-fitting cloth
with long basques Long satin evening coats with quilled edgings and full leg-of-mutton sleeves go over dresses with trains and bare shoulders Embroidered net glo- ves, silken chatelaines, fans, silk purses, commodious bags, delicate slippers, decorative belts accom- pany these dresses,

Jeanne Lanvin brings From Spanish America heavy uma- mental metal and leather, broadly sombrero padded shoulders, and hats. Deprived of some of their Bouth American trimmings Lan- vin's dresses are easy to wear. She is faithful to black, white, navy blue, belge, and grey for the morning. Her evening tulle and taffeta dresses have full skirts and puffed sleeves. Her house dresses and Kttle dinner dresses have long, full bishop sleeves and long. slender skirts.
INFLUENCED BY CHINA
Vionnet, Molyneux, and Bruyere are influenced by China. Tunics, alecves, collars, embroideries, co- lours, linings, and hats refect 3 rich Chinese simplicity; the mate- rials are Ight woollens. heavy silk crepes, and jerseys. Vionnet's embroidered belts, however, Moly- neux's 'straight costs with peaked shoulders, and Bruyere's collars, blouses, and trimmings are adap- tations rather than copies.
Mainbocher, whose bolero points to1 Spanish influence. fastens skirts, coats, capes, and blouses down the back. Some of his skirts are very full and pleated into the belt; they are worn with boleros and Spanish-looking hats. The skirt of two tiers is for the evening: it is of figured taffeta over, a pleated chiffon under- dress. Bemi-evening dresses have plain long, slim skirts, full and richly embroidered blouses, and long, straight chiffon jacketa, black, white, or coloured. Malti- bocher's morning clothes are grey, dark blue, and black. Bright co- Tours are only for the evening: there are many figured materials. Lucien Lelong, who gets strong effects by contrasting mustard yellow with dead white or bright green with brown, shows no more. than a hint of Greece in the way he, drapes his evening dresses, and his boleros of white pigskin ard no more Spanish than Al- gerian. White crochet lace collars and cuffs trim black and blue" tallormades and little dressen. An evening cape of ivory white netted chenille is slung on a cord to the shoulders. Pleated sleeves, panels, and skirts are often the only trimmings. Lelong's lines are in variably simple.
Pyjamas have almost disappear- ed: Molyneux shows one or two. and Schiaparelli some for the beach, but the neglige to-day is as Yrande makes it for the house a long, straight pleated dress of nen with a high waist and a low neck, and a jacket or long straight coat of brocade, satin, taffeta, or lace. Vera Bores has some gay and simple bead frocks cut low in the back and to be worn with cape. Jacket, or bolero.

BASQUES EVERYWHERE
Waistlines at both dresses and piouses are having special atten- Mom.
Instead of the more usual belt, shaped basques in the same material as the dress are being worn. These are placed on rather a high waisted Ine and, wiless carefully shaped, they are only becoming to slim vures
SHORTENING-UP
There is a general shortening up At both skirts and sleeves. Skirts are tube-like in their nar- rawness. Room to walk is given by a fan of flat pleats placed low down either at the side or in the centre front of the skirt. Many sleeves are elbow length and large baby puffs are seen on evening and afternoon dresses.
NECKLINE NOVELTIES · Great attention is being paid to nett-lines. They still came up to the throat, but rules, hain" frills

EMBROIDERY FLASHES
Dark talored dresses and jum- per sults are relieved by bright dashes of embroidery in rather unexpected places. The upper art of a light sleeve is, a Tavou- rite spot for a wool embroidered motif or monogram, whilst just above the knee was another place chosen for a batch of Chinese writing. The centre back, just between the shoulders may also carty

BUNCHY SHOULDERS
The sloping shoulder emphasis.. ed by the raglan sleeve is no longer scen. In its place is a square padded shoulder line with sleeves that give a bunchy look on the top seam. This broaden- ing out of the shoulder is con- accentuated sidered to give an slim effect to the hips, but it s not becoming to short figures.

PARIS FEATURES
NEW CAPES.
Waist, Hip, Three-Quarter And Ground
Capes were not anticipated in suck numbers for the Spring and Summer. Fractically every type, whether waist, lp, three-quarter, OL ground length for evening wear, in the Vionnet collection shows the built-out shoulder.
These cape Enes are fat and at waist length take effect over black and white plaid frocks with bright coloured belts. An excellent idea, « too, is a checked woollen cape out on the blas for wear over a plain coloured frock,
Full length coats flow easily without meeting in front over floral printed or plain coloured summer frocks and, since 'sleeves are wide, the outline' is alender.
Colours for these coats of duvetyne are alluring in sili petu- - nia shades-two of which might form an ensemble. Examples convey petunia pink under ́petù- nia purple-or maybe purple over a violet blue frock with full "bis- hop" sleeves of the former colour. Vionnet chooses these excellent colours again for flowing evening cape drapes that swathe the figure over. gowns of floral lorganza or in plain colours such as `turquoise bie and archid maive.
Another summer evening wrap- which is interesting comes from Worth. It is a full length redin- gote of white lorganza with Ave rows of delicate black monkey fringe surrounding" the skirt berieath hip level. This is work with a black chiffon gown,
