CONTACT WITH INDIAN
ART
London, Feb, 0. Since the opening of the Exhibi- tion of Chinese Art at Burlington ilouse two exhibitions have been ald at Messrs, Sparks's Galleries, 125, Mount Street, in conjunction with Mesars. C. T. Loo, of Paris, the first being devoted to porcelain and pottery and the second to paintings. On Monday a third ex- hibition of Chinese sculpture and jade was opened at the same gal- leries, which equals in interest and
two importance the that have preceded it.
Fine examples of early Chinese sculpture are rare, but in this ex- hibition are to be found figures which equal in quality and rarity. some of the most notable pieces in the Burlington House exhibition.
The Chinese contact with Indian art is strongly marked in many of the exiribita, among them being a fourteenth-century bronze figure of Civa Nataraja dancing on the body of an Aspamara Purusha (No. 1) and two magnificent figures of Bodhisattva, one of the early Tang Dynasty, in coarse red sandstone, and the other of the Sui Dynasty i. greyish marble (Noe, 4 and 5).
Of interest, too, is a Buddha, supported by an Atlante holding his feet, inscribed and dated ud. 105, inspired by Greek Buddhist sculpture of India, and rarely oc curring on Chinese Buddhist sculp tures (No. 40). -LI
Visitors should note No. 7:4 Isented figure of Kwan Yin in red- T'ang sandstone of the early Dynasty, somewhat similar to the Sung figure in wood in the Eumor- fopoulos collection at South. Ken- Angton, and No. 10, a dignified figure of a Maitreya Buddha of the late Tang Dynasty in gilded and Jacquered wood.
The inde includes many fine pieces of the Chou Dynasty and d' number of white and yellow (XLN- ples of the Ch'ien Lung Dynasty.

EVENING DRESS

A white marcella irock worn by Miss Claire Luce is an adaptation of an evening dress of 1840; it is close-fitting on tailored lines with
waistcoat top in black quins and it swings out to show u petticoat of the sequins. Miss Madeleine Gibson has a costume of ice-white satin pigskin: the ütted jacket has a wide collar and long sleeves, and the full skirt is split down the centre. It is lined in midnight blue and fastens with bue inks and with It a vast blue fat felt hat is worn ike a halo with a mirror star to reflect the light. The Bogartn dresses, made of canvas sprayed' with paint, are wonderfully exec- tive.

it came to showing off the effects of tropical colour the Cuban "muchachas" in their scanty gowns and writhing speed made their yellows, greens, reds, and magentas glow with heat against their dark skins.
A pretty frock of green cloque is worn by Miss Iris March; it is cut on the cross and the yoke is tled in a bow in front. Another simple but neat dress is of brown c're satin, worn by Miss Elizabeth" Corcuran; It is closely moulded to the figure and has a collar of bright green taffeta which ties in a bow at the neck and a green z'p which fastens the dress at the side. Two ultra-modern evening. frocks worn by Miss Cia're Luce and Miss Iris March were in stift primrose-yellow satin with built- out, bodies shell-shaped and with waistcoat points. Combinations of black, white. grey, silver, and dull gold, with relief of anemone colours, are the smartest of all, as well as the most appropriate. The plg, flat- tish black hats, with a dash of the Chinese in their inspiration, help greatly in these. They seem to stay in place by some kind of hypnotism from the brain beneath them; but the actual force is elastic, hidden by the numberless little curls thus imposed upon the colffure at the back. There is a slightly pointed effect about the most attractive of the afternoon cutdoor, costumes-a long maini line, with a swagger or semi- swagger cost, its corners swing- ing, a neck-ruffle very crisp of outline, the definite edge of the thin wide brim,, and a tall, slen- der sunshade (bless their hopeful hearts!), with small gauntlets to the gloves (which are made of the same material as the dress, or Its trimmings), give this pleasing perkiness to the general appear- ance." COURTAULD TARN Another triumph among the materials is the latest Courtauld yarn, called "Fibro," which can be used to form forty different materials. It is so much in de- mand that a special factory hus been bulls for it. Its various " manifestations,
ranging from tweed to satin, have been made into appropriate clothes by Isobel, who belleves, and proclaims, and proves that this country can dress Itself from loom to dressing-room, with no need to ask for help from abroad. The Fibro materials are good for soft draperies as well as for tailored lines; on the other hand, when pleated they retain the sharpness of their creasing.
On the whole, all these lines are simple beneath the elaboration which is worked out in exquisite gossamer webs, Heaven help all lady's maids, so long as there are so many little tulle frills, or net ruffles, or lace pleatings to be kept in order! The effect is very lovely, as delicate as dawn-but as fleeting.
