Cause Explained
The pressing need for birth con- trol in the Orient was stressed "by Mrs. Edith How-Martyn, Hon. Director of the Birth Control In- Lernational Centre, London, at an Interview granted to a representa- tive of "The Hong Kong Dally Press at Gloucester Buliding yesterday. Mrs. How-Martyn tour- ed, India in the company of Mrs. Margaret Sanger, world famous birth control advocate, and rélat- ing her experiences in India, Mrs. How-Martyn said that the recep- tion accorded them throughout this vast Empire was encouraging to the extreme.
The tour was originally planned in response to an invliation from the All-India Women's "Conference for Mrs. Sanger to be a speaker. The invitation was accepted be- cause of the firm conviction that from an economical as well as a humanitarian point of view, India needed scientific birth control.
Touching upon the effects of the rour, Mr. How-Martyn said that these would not be apparent in statistical figures for some years to come, but the personal effects could be seen at once In une happiness of adherents of this cause.

A PROFITABLE YEAR

Gentlemen:—

CATERING-
The Membership has decreased by 72 but last year the Absent Mem- pers amounted to 63 on our list and these now only total 10. The continued depression, with the consequent cuts in salaries, etc. has had a very detrimental effect on the Club. Nevertheless, your Committee is optimistic.
England, said our Luformant had practised birth control for the past 60 years. In 1878 Charles Brad- laugh and Anne Besiaht republish- ed a book written by a doctor in America. The British Govern- ment persecuted the writers on the ground that the work was im- moral, but the subsequent public- ly given the case by the press, found many followers. our Members,
AN APPEAL
At this stage, I appeal to our Chinese members to bring more of their friends along to join the Club There has been a large falling off in the Chinese mem- bership and it cannot all be put down to the depression. It is possibly owing to the Secretary not being able to talk "handicaps" etc. This Club, however, can of- fer much more than that, it can offer friendship and mutual under- standing and I earnestly, appeal to the incoming Chairman who, in the ensuing year will be Chinese, to see that he can get the support from his section.

old members back by circularizing everyone who had resigned at the time that the subscription was in- creased to $10.- but the response has not been what was anticipated and I appeal to all members who know of their friends who have resigned, to talk with them and bring them back. This Club must go on-it being the only men's in- ternational Club in the Colony!

THE FINANCES
Turning now to the Income and Expenditure Account, I am sure Fou will be pleased to see that we have been able to turn the year Our expenditure with a profit. has been halved although the in- come is considerably down, both with regard to subscriptions and Bar sales. Regarding the latter. this can be accounted for in the
fact that many ardent supporters of the bar have given up "strong drink" in the quest of bealth and strength, with the result that in trying to find it they have gone
the
into strict training with gentleman operating across the passage who not only guarantees the making of budding Bandows, but actually produces them, part of the care, however, being the observance of temperance to the considerable reduction in amount of our bar sales,
