The Newcastle is the first of a new class of cruisers designed as an answer to certain foreign ves- sela. She has a displacement of '9,000 tons, and will be armed with twelve 8-inch guns in four, triple turrets; eight 4-inch anti-aircraft guns, and 22, smaller weapons She will carry eight 21-inch tor- pedo tubes in two quadruple mountings, and will be provided with a catapult and two aircraft. Her machinery which consists of the usual geared turgines, is being built by Messrs. Vickers-Armstrong Barrow-in- at at their works Furness. The turbines, of 98.000 produce a horse-power, should
speed of 32 knots.
Her sister ship, the Southamp ton, is now being" built and en- gined by Messrs. John Brown and Co., Clydebank. Both vessels should be completed for sea dur- ing the present year.
Six further cruisers of the sumie type are under construction in The Sheffield, various yards. Glasgow and Birmingham--of the 1934 programme should join the Fleet during 1937; and the Liver- pool, Manchester, and Gloucester of the 1935 programme — in 1938.
Under our present treaty obliga- Hons, which expire on December 31, 1936, this leaves another 27,000 tons available for cruiser building in the forthcoming Navy Estimates for the current year.
