The trial, opened at the Ola Bailey to-dav ut Garabed Bishir- Howeson and Louis gian, John Hardy, all prominent City, men." charged in connection with the prospectus issued to the public in connection with the bankrupt Arm of James and shakespeare, Ltd.. during 'the pepper market crisis. All the accused pleaded "Not Quilty."

"The Attorney General, Sir Thomas Inskip, K.C., in outlining the case, sald the prosecution "alleged that the prospectus " was false as a whole. because "of umis- sion of facts which should have been "stated. He submitted that it was plain to anybody acquainted with the composition of Wulianu Henry and Co., the former sub- sidiary of James and Shakespeare. that something was afoot outside the ordinary business of a metal produce dealer

HONG KONG RIFLE

ASSOCIATION

Spoon And Practice Shoot

With the return of many members from camp, the number attending the Association's mid-week Spoon and Practice Shoot yesterday afternoon showed a considerable increase over the nuni- ber who had been présent at the shoots during the past few weeks, "and although the camps are not yet over, it is already obvious that all the accommodation available will be required between now and the Prize Meeting next April

The weather, after the rain of yesterday was all that could be desired, although a constantly changing light due to clouds passing over the sun, worried many members at the shorter dis- tance.

Unfortunately, it was found necessary to suspend firing dur- ing that period of the afternoon when the light is best le, be- tween three and four o'clock, which`resulted in members having to fire at 500 yards in a rapidly falling light which, in the case of the last detail, became one of semi-darkness.

We are asked to state that as it is likely that the Bentor Ser- vice will require their 'range at Stonecutters on Saturday after- noon, arrangements are being made, if possible, to hold a Spoon and Practice shoot on this range on Sunday morning; should this be feasible, a notification will appear in these columns on Satur- day morning.

The leading scores made this afternoon were as given below and it will be noted la the case of those firing with the "1914" rifle, how seriously affected they were due to the causes mention- ed above:-

PROSPECTUS CLAIMS The prospectus dilated upon the fact that James and Shakespeare were an old-established firm, re- ferred to the commodity business of Bishirglan and Co.; and referred to the continuity of management for which provision would be made.

These show that the gross trade of Malaya (that is the exports and Imports combined) amounted to $1,062,910,000, as compared with $1,039,922,000 in the previous year, an increase of $22.988,000.

This however, makes very poor showing by comparison with 1934's increase of $261,384,000 over 1933. The following grows trade figures
