It is announced that several idle yards on the northeast coast along the Tyne and the Tees are to be reopened. The total orders given recently for new vessels from the yards of the Tyne, the Wear and the Tees rivers have reached 75

"SCRAP AND BUILD” SCHEME Meanwhile official details of the working of the "Scrap and Bulid” scheme for British shipping show" that 45 vessels of about 198,000 tons gross have been put up for serapping. This leaves 78,000 tons still to be nominated for scrapping to complete the amount of 274,000 tons under the scheme

This scheme, on the basis of two tons scrapped for each new ton built. Is for 36 veseels of about 137,- 000 tons, to cost about £2,640.000 Orders have already been placed tor 24 of these, and applications for four others have been lodged.

Or the vessels for breaking up 11 have been sold to British and 15 to foreign ship breakers. while the disposal of the remaining 19 has not yet been decided,

So far only about one quarter of the amount of £10,000,000, avail- able over

the two years under scheme has been applied for.
