A Frans Hals "Find"
"London, Jan, 16. At a recent sale on the South Coast a discerning dealer was attracted by a painting of two fisher-boys. No one else in the sale room appreciated its quality, and he bought it for £3.
The delighted buyer took it to Christie's, and there found his belief that he had made a "find" confirmed by Sir Alec Martin, Christie's picture expert, who duly had it catalogued as the work of Frans Hals.
During the week many experts and dealers had examined the picture, a square canvas measuring. 274in, by 271in,, and few who re- cognized its fine quality were sur- brised when the bidding opened with an offer of 300 guineas. It soon..became apparent that this "unconsidered trife" was to make big price, and to secure it Mesara. Spink and Son had to bid up to 2,800 guineas.
