Shipping News Dally Statement, Clearances,
S. S. WAN LIU BEACHED
Mishap to a Upper River Vessel
Shanghai, Jan 30. News has been received by the head office of Messrs. Butterfeld Swire of the beaching a few days Ego of the company's as. Wan Llu in the Yangtze River, 273 miles above Ichang. Inasmuch as the only information concerning the mishap to the ship has been in the form of telegrams, nothing is Fet known as to the cause of the accident or the actual date on which it occurred.
It le learned, however, that the Wan Liu was beached after her No. 1 and 2 holds had been badly damaged, and it is though; that this occurred on elther Sunday or Monday. "The company's ss. Bult- ing immediately proceeded to the scene with salvage gear, while H.MS. Falcon is now standing by, in view of reports concerning the activities of bandits in the Bar- rounding district.
The latest message states that the Wan Lu is at present dis charging her cargo. Inasmuch as shipping movements on the upper Yangtze, between Ichang and Chungking, are dependent entire- ly upon the cargo offering, it is unknown whether he was pro- ceeding to or from Ichang. The probabilities are, however, in fa- vour of her proceeding up-river. The Wan. Lu was formerly the. as. I'Ping, of the Yangtze Rapids Steamship Co., and was laken over by Messrs. Butterfeld & Swire last year when that company went into liquidation('N.C.D.N.)
ATLANTIC LINER AS
TROOPSHIP
London, Jun. 4. The Cunard-White Star 20,000-con liner Scythia has been taken over by_the. War Office as a troopship,
For nearly a fortnight workmen have been busy night and day trans- forming the liner.
The vessel sailed from the Huskisson Dock, Liverpool, on Saturday night.
Although several Liverpool cargo. vessels have recently been chartered by the Government, this is the first time for many years that an At- lantic liner has been chartared.
ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
Loudon, Jan. 17.
As at present arranged, a meet ing of the Atlantic Conference is to be held in London on January The members will have under discussion the situation created by the rating of the liner Queen Mary as a cabin ship and the notice of resignation from the Conference tendered by Cunard White Star, Limited, which, unless withdrawn, will take effect at the end of this month.
