The West has long been quainted with Chinese silks and embroideries, with Chinese jades, ivories, bronzes and cloisonnés; but many of those who have thronged to Burlington House must have been surprised by the masterpieces of what we patronisingly call the fine arts in which they had sup- posed Europe to be pre-eminent. Those paintings on silk and on paper are evidently examples of a great school of art which is, or was, equal to anything in the West. Indeed, we believe that there are Furopean artists who would admit that in subtlety and refinement of drawing, of colour, of composition the Western artist has a good deal to learn from the East. There is an assured completeness of æsthetic fuläiment in many of these paintings which might challenge comparison with the greatest of Spain, Flanders and Italy. And yet since the Masters all attain to beauty in their several ways, com- parisons are odious. We merely say that Holbein or Dürer or Rem-
gravely saluted these Masters of the Sung and Ming as initiates and equals in their gracious mystery.
In the work of all great Masters there is an apparently easy but really arduous victory which en- titles them to the same laurels. Their work is the result of the same manual mastery. the same profound knowledge, the same in- tense concentration. Moreover, al-
