Nine Goals

Tranmere Rovers, a term in the Northern Section of the Third Division, uchieved considerable fame yesterday through the fact that Bell, their centre-forward. scored nine of his side's 12 goals In the match against Oldham Athletic, It was less than a fore- night ago that Drake, of Arsenal, scored seven goals in a match. In whatever way the goals were scored, this is a remarkable teak and Bell, should he never score again, has made his place in foot- ball history secure.

Although a few matches had to be cancelled conditions, in spite of reports from some grounds of the heavy ball, and slippery turf, were better than could have been

expected on Christmas Eve. There were somė extremely surprising results in the Championship, and the outcome of it all is that Sun- derland, who had one match scratched, are strengthened in their hold on the leadership, and that Brentford, by winning both their matches, have shown that they possess not only football skill, but the necessary fighting spirit.
