Coats are the "diplomats" "for a woman's wardrobe according to Bernard Newman, famous desig- ner at the RKO Radio Studios..

Newman, who has just complet- ed the varier" ensembles worn by Ginger Rogers in her latest star- ring vehicle. "In Person," explains. that the duty of the coat is to unite various ensembles and make them peaceable companions in- stead of embattled strangers.

"The average woman is unable to purchase a coat for each en- semble, and so is forced to select a wrap she can wear on various occasions with various dresLES," Newman explained.

In this case, she must choose a 'diplomatic' style and colour which will blend with her entire daytime ward- robe. This season, bright warm colours are the keynoté of style, but with a little management col- our and diplomacy "can both be arranged.

"In style, coata this winter are longer, flared and box styles be- ing favoured,” the designer added, "This is true even "of" fur coats. Rough Woolens, tweeds, plaids, novetly coatings of all sorts are preferred.

"Flared and box lines are seen for evening as well as for daytime wear," Newman continued. "M addition, the draped classic cloaks are popular and correct. Velvets, brocades and lames are the popu-
