The Prince of Wales was forty-two on June 23rd last. His age completes nearly half the normal life-time of a man. He is the idol of the Empire, and the most popular young man in the world. His popularity is so great that it is proof against even the thoughtless flattery that inevitably paranes bim. At the end of his forty-two years, matured in mind, in body, and in reputation, where does he stand? What does the future hold for him? What are the qualities that have made him, while still a young man, so beloved? The answer is his private character.

First, he has in him a blend of tastes peculiarly English. He loves sport and game-hunting, golf, squash rackets all that is most strenuous in the way of exer- cise. For flat racing and shooting he cares less, because in neither can he find full satisfaction for his extraordinary appetite for action, which in him amounts almost to: a mania for fitness.

The Prince is undoubtedly popular because he is the son of a popular King. The glamour of birth predisposes people in his favour. But far more than any such glorious accident is the power of the personal equation..

Then there is his courage. It is not the courage of a man to whom fear is ua- known; it is the courage of a man for whom fear is unthinkable. Over and over again during the war that was proved beyond all question of flattery. The high authorities were in a perpetual perspiration of anxiety and annoyance, trying to prevent the heir, to the throne from getting himself blown to pieces. There were endless arguments between the Prince and the Generals, in one of which he said to Lord Kitchener:-
