VESSEL ADRIFT FOR A MONTH

Ten Members of Crew Perish of Hunger

The story of how a Manchuriad junk was caught in a gale-like wind, and drifted on the open sea for over a month, ten members of ner crew dying of starvation, was unfolded yesterday. The junk, the Ching Cheng, owned by Sun Shen-chi of Antung. registered

No. 1008, was chartered by a group of Shantung merchants, and left Antung for the south early in De- cember last year. After one day and one night, gale blew up and the mountainous seas made it im-

possible for the crew to steer the vessel. For over a month, she drifted helplessly on the open sea, to the south of Koren. When the food was finished, ten of the 50 persons carried by the vessel per- ished of hunger. The survivoIA. also suffered greatly from the cold. After giving up hope of being rescued, the' crew, to their great delight, discovered one morning that land had appeared. That was about January 4. The junk finally was brought to a small island where inquiries by the crew re- vealed that they had arrived in Laoshan, Shantung. The authorit- les of the Laoshan Public Safety Bureau raked sumclent money to repatriate the crew.
