Jesus and the Modern World APPOINTMENTS VICTORIA LEAGUE M/V “VICTORIA”
The following sermon was de- livered by Bishop Hall on Sunday at St. John's Cathedral
Jesus of Nazareth, has made the modern world what it is and can make life in it free, creative and peaceful. I mean what I say: Is Terus of Nazareth who has made the modern world what it is and he can make life in it for you and me free, creative and peaceful. It is indeed for you and for me that He has made the modern world what it is that we may live in it in freedom and in peace and share in its creative lie.
the present time. These jeactions are like the darkest nour before the dawn, the last desperate cling- ing to something which has been good but must be taken up to something better if its own good- dess is to be preserved. That these revivals of nationalism are doomed is shown by the fact that they all endeavour to be interna tional. These national movements all endeavour to develop corres- ponding national movements in` ather countries. It is perhaps un necessary for me to remind you of Jesus, share in making the world aucity. But, it is plain that he I do not of course mean that
If He had Jesus of Nazareth has made stums died for this purpose. and wars and bitterness in homnked to become a national leader life. But he has made the things he could have died fighting for that matter most in our modern his country, instead He died be- world. These are first of all caused He refused to take the na- science and secondly world unity clonal view. inaugurated the world wide com- munity in which the bond would be love not in idea but in action. We are nearer to the realization of that community than we have
He has made modern science, It He had never lived and died and risen again there would have been no modern science. That of course I cannot prove and if you disagree with me you cannot Drove the opposite. Jesus did lve, He did die, He did rise again and the his- lory of Europe since that time has been dominated by the acceptance. or rejection of Jesus Christ.
That is a plain fact of history but I must justify my statement in more detail. I will do that in two ways. First, historically science arose after the Reformation and was in a large measure caused by the same spirit that made the Reformation; it is therefore of re- ligious parentage. It is equally true that itk parents have
understood it never
and it has therefore grown up with a twist against its own home..".

been. It is indeed becaUSE we are so near that we wounded and hurt by the recrude- scence of warfare. If we were not so near in heart and mind to the world unity which He is making we would not feel the sin and shame and pity of war as we do.
Here then again we can take new faith and new courage know- ing that the world is in Jesus' hands and that the alarming out- break of the war spirit as the pre- sent time are not so alarming AS they seem because their power alarm us is caused by the success of the other movement to world peace which He inaugurated and will complete. In the heart of our fear, then lles reassurance and hope.
"And let the prince of Look grim as e'er he will, He harms us not a whit. For why?-hls doom is write." FREEDOM OF WOMEN
Secondly in spirit science owes Its being to Jesus Christ. May I put it this way; if you compare the religion that Jesus found with the real religion of Jesus' life as you see it profoundly in the' par- able of the Good Samaritan-you
But much the most important are comparing a, religion of man's desire with a religion of passion-factor in the modern world which ate obedience to an unseen reality, again is a direct result of Jesus is not that an exact parallel to life and teaching both before and the fantastic notions which mas after His resurrection is the free- queraded as science in mediaeval dom of women from an unequal common fe in Europe when compared with the position in our passionate obedience to objective the world.
