The China Association held its annual dinner at Grosvenor House last night. Lord Winterton, the president, was in the chair, and the Chinese Ambassador attended.

In proposing" the toast of "Our Guests" the President contratu- inted M. Quo Tai-chi on his recent elevation from the rank of Minis- ter to that of Ambassador. He said that the task of the British Government. was an onerous une in the Far East. It was to try to correlate the legitimate interest of Great Britain with those of China, Japan, the United States: Boviet Russia, and other Powers, II', therefore, they were sometimes impatient with our own Govern- ment let them remember the di- ficulties and try by study to obtain a world-wide view of Imperial 'and international politics and pro-

WILLIAM PLEASED WITH HONG SONG Sir William Feel. the retiring Governor of Hong-Kong, who re- plied, said that he went to Hong- kong six years ago after having nad 32 years' resident service in Malaya. His term in Hong Kong had been extremely pleasant and interesting, largely owing to the friendship and assistance of the unofficial community who had shown their earnest desire to sa sist the Government instead of in- dulging in destructive criticism. Relations between Hong Kong and Canton had for some years past been distinctly friendly, though he was disappointed that they had not shown more concrete results He was afraid that he must apologize to the Chinese Ambas- sador for saying so, but, in spite of the friendship which undoubt- edly existed, he was afraid that their Canton. friends had given very few concrete proofs of their desire to help the Colony. The spirit of rivalry all existed. He could not but deplore it because he felt confident that each place could give something which would be to the other's advantage. had been suggested in some, quar- ters that our Protectorates and Colonies should be placed under mandates. Anything more mis- chievous he could not imagine, nor could he after 38 years' experience
