WHEN IS INTERPORT TEAM TO BE CHOSEN?

Progress In Caer Clark And Mamak Contests

(BY "ADREMI")

With passages booked for the Interport visit of the lady hockey players to Shanghal, and with the northern port going fuff steam ahead with preparat ons, and only a month and s half remaining before the big game is scheduled to take place, no Selection Committee has yet been formed and no trial games have as yet been arranged.

i The lask for the Selection Committee is a serious one, and the persons to be asked to form this body should be recruited from those fully conversant with local bockey circles, and they should have a thorough knowledge of the abilities of the players taking part in the game here.

One thing is sare. There is very little time to apare and something must be done to expedite matters. Il a polection committee be formed at once, the members of this body could attend games for the pur- pose of studying "form" and thus be in a better position to judge and select the best players avail- able.

Invitation Shoot On Wednesday

The third invitation shoot of the Hong Kong Rife Association was held concurrently with the ordinary mid-week Spoon" and Practice Shoot on the Army Ranges at Kowloon City on Wednes- day afternoon, when teams from HMS. "Kent," Royal Engineers. 2nd Bn. Royal 'Welch Fusiliers, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence- Corps and Hong Kong Pollce competed in a six-a-side match, fred with the rifle "as issued" under King's First Stage cond!- tions

With an overcast sky, the light was "not too good and it be- came poor late in the afternoon when the teams were "fring at the longest distance, 600 yards.

The Royal Engineers won by a margin of eight points more than was made by the runners up, the 2nd Ba. Royal Walch Fusiliers. The latter team in turn, was only one point ahend of the visiting team from HMS. "Kent." and then followed the Police with an aggregate of 486 and the Volunteers with 442

Specially noticeable was the high average per man made by the Bappers at 500 yards; it is not often, that this reaches the Agures attained-30.68 out of 35 with the use of the sling bar- red, "Bisley" targets and no aperture sight.

Concurrent with the above match, the usual Spoon and Practice Shoot took place, when in the SR. (b) Class, C.P.O. Black, R.N. scored 99 out of a possible 105, and so won the Nett Aggregate Spoon.

HOW MALAYA

WAS EXPLORED

Singapore Journalist's Address

An address on "The Exploration of Malaya" was delivered to the Indian Association, Singapore, an Dec. 3 by Mr. G. L. Peat.

The speaker said that his story began in the nineteenth century. He was not qualified to study Poz÷ tuguese and Dusch records, and an might have overlooked some not- able journeys into the hinterland by men of those races but it waR unlikely that the Portuguese and Dutch ventured far into the i- terior, having regard to their re- lations with the Malays and their policy of confining themselves to trading centres on the sea-coast.

Mr. Peet sald that the first no- table journey into the interior by an Englishman which he had been able to discover occurred in 1837, when an adventurer named Gray travelled from Malaces through the Negri Sembilan, crossed the watershed and then proceeded by the Jempol and other rivers into the interior of Pahang, where he bartered oplum for gold. Gray re- turned by the same route în 14 days and died of fever in Malacca shortly afterwards.

More thorough and scientiac ex~ ploration was undertaken a little Cater by Father Favre, a Catholic missionary. He was undoubtedly the first white man to cross aou- thern Johore, a feat which he ac- complished when he set out from Singapore to travel up the Johore Rver and then across country to Mount Ophir.

2.

AMBITIOUS UNDERTAKING This most ambitious undertaking was not fulfilled, owing to the ex- haustion of his Portuguese servant and Chinese bearer, but he did succeed in walking "across country from the Bungel Sayong to the headwaters of the Bennt River whence he travalled down to the ses and along the coast to Ma- lacca, arriving there 25 days after he left Bingapore,'

After referring to Journeys up the Pahang River and Kedah River in 1860, and to the Rahman mines in Upper Perak (then in the State of Rahman) by Governor Law" in 1831. Mr. Peet described the his- torle journeys made by William Cameron across the main range. from Kinta into. Pahang and down to the China Seá, and by Sir Frank Bwettenham up the Bernam River, over the main range, down the Lipis and so to Kuala Pahang.

The first white men to use the famillar route over the Malayan watershed at is narrowest point, reached via the headwaters of the Muar River, seemed to have been Messys. Daly and O'Brien same- where about. 1880,

SIR HUGH CLIFFORD'S WORK

Mr. Peet then referred to the exploration of eastern Malaya, re- calling the first mining prospec- tors, Frasel (who lived at Tras. before British administration be- gan in Pahang) and the Austra- lians whe ́ operied up the Raub Gold Mine.

He went on to speak of the ex- porations of Sir Hugh Clifford, who, he said, had probably tra- veiled over more new country than any other Europear in the history of Malayan exploration. In part- cutar Mr. Peet referred to air Hugh's journey along the foot of
