Harriman's Weekly Review
in at $88 and more
A phase "in the history" of the Colony came to pass when, the government announced their new monetary policy of a managed cur- rency on Thursday last and the feeling" of increased security and confidence that pervaded the mar- ket after the announcement spells "a new prosperity" in the story of the Colony of Hong Kong: The Government of Hong Kong are to be congratulated on their wise move and we are confident that the tide has turned in the future pro- sperity of the Colony: as we polat- ed our in our notes last week the exchange factor has been playing "ducks and drakes" with the stab- ility and confidence of our market for years past and the firm and confident attitude adopted by our seniors can be productive of no- thing but praise for their fore- sight, and admiration for having the courage of their own convic- tions. At the early part of the week (before the news of a "manag- »nd currency", was: announced) the market opened quietly, but a con- siderable turnover has taken place during the latter part of the week and rates in the investment sec- tion have been marked up con- siderably, Hong Kong Lands after having changed hands at $35, rose steadily to $36 Hong Kong Trams opening with buyers. at $134, “Imm- proved to $141, closing with en- quiries at this rate, Star Ferries were dealt shares were wanted at this. Agure.
Hong Kong Mectrics had sales recorded at $813 at the beginning of the week but latterly rose 6 points, closing with buyers at 389 after business done at $70. Tele- phones (old) were a prominent feature having improved from $21.85 to $25).. Wharves were in fairly good demand, business hav- ing been done at $90/91. Dalry Farms improved to a buying rate of $181. Minor issues enjoyed their fair share of popularity, Providenta (old) rose from 80 cents to $1.25 closing in demand at the latter figure. Hotels after having been done at $4.60, rallied to $5.10 at which rate there were free buyers. Cements Improved from $4.75 to $64, Ropes changed hands at the enhanced rate of $44/44. China Lights opened with buyers at $10, but soon showed considerable"
done up strength and were
to $10.80 cash and $11.20 February. In the sterling sections, Hong Kong Banks remained "more or less un- changed, with, business done at $1280/1350. Unions were better with transactions put through and scrip, in demand at $560/65. The tone of the market at the close is very encouraging, and everything points to a now "ers" in the future prosperity and history of the Co- lony of Hong Kong with renewed, and continuous activity in the share market assured,
