Terrible Gunshot Wounds
WOUNDED UNTENDED ON BATTLEFIELD
Shortage Of Equipment And Medical Personnel
London, December 4. ', Mr. Collins, Router's special war correspondent, cables from somewhere to the sauth of liga as follows: "I am witnessing the most pitiable" and saddest scenes in my life. The Ethiopian wounded brought back to the Daggabbur and Jijiga hospitals are suffering from terrible gunshot wounds. Very often they are not tended for upwards of a week because the nospitais' trst amI- stations do not exist.
"In South Dagrahbar transport facilities for evacuating the wounded from the front line ar woefully inadequate Doctors and patients tell of the most tragic stories of wounded lying on the battlefeld for days, sometimes dying from exposure and sometimes from the wounds becoming septle. Splints and appll- ances to stem hemorrhage are lacking, also stretchers and skilled ambulance workers.
"Scores if not hundreds of Ethiopians have died owing to the absence of proper medical attention. The extraordinary feature of these sad conditions is the uncomplaining attitude of the wounded.
"I talked to a N.C.O. with a terrible gunshot, wound two inches deep between the knee and the shin who was receiving his first dressing to-day, though he had been hit twelve days ago, The doctors may save him, but the amputation of his leg is certain, as, poisoning may have set in, whlist have attention prompt
would avoided it.
"The only two cheerful factors is the comparatively small number of wounded The total at Juga and Daggahbur hospitals does not exceed two hundred and magnifl- cent work is done by France Ismail
