That the bequest of the late Sir Paul Chater is an absolute bequest to the Government and that the Government is unaware that the Testator made any qualification of the bequest, or ex- pressed any wish that the property should be devoted to any par- ticular purpose was the answer given by the Hon. Mr. D. W. Tratman (the Colonial Secretary) to the questions asked by the Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson as regards the Government granting the use of the late Sir Paul Chater's mansion, Marble Bal, as a re- sidence for the Admiral, at a meeting of The Legislative Coun- cll held. yesterday afternoon.

Subsequent to the meeting of the Legislative Council, the Finance Committee met and votes totalling $28,882 were passed. Evidence given was to the effect that on Nov. 13 in the morning, defendant went to complainant's shop, and there he picked up a quarrel with complainant over some plans,
Further altercations took place after he had left the shop followed by complainant, and during the later quarrel, defendant was alleged to have struck the complainant,
