S'HAI POLICE
OLD COMRADES LLOYD TRIESTINO
FORM ORGANIZATION AT TIFFIN HELD IN LONDON
Capt. Martin Elected First President
At tiffin held at the Holborn Restaurant in London on October 23 the Shangbai Police Old Com- rades Association was officially formed and given a "good start in life. The affair was attended by about a score of former members of the S.MP., now living in retire- ment at Home, and thres official ruests, including the present Com- missioner of Police.
England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales were all represented by re- tired members of the 8.MP, and the Police colours in chrysanthem- ums formed the table decorations. Twenty member's sat down to tlfin and they had the honour of the company of Maj. F. W; Gerrard, C.1.2. Commissioner of Police, and Messrs. Fairbairn and Leslie, who were in England on furlough.
Tizin over, some minutes were devoted to the business side of the Association.
Capt. R. M. J. Martin was no- minated and elected founder and president. Maj. A. Hilton Johnson, vice president, and Mr. T. Idwal Vaughan, honorary secretary and
treasurer.
Capt. Martin said he was more than "gratified at the hearty res- ponse made to the original pro- posal and thanked the members for the honour conferred on him by making him the first president of the Association. Of 38 members on the retired list living in Great Britain and Ireland, 31. had joined the Association, 20 were present, others no doubt would have at- tended but for pecuilar and spe cal circumstances' in each case:
A very special welcome was ex- tended to Maj. A, Hilión Johnson after his recent illness, which wel- come was applauded by all pre- sent.
Functions of Association -
-།
Capt. Martin continued by day- ing that the Association gave all an opportunity of getting together to talk over old-time struggles, battles, Mixed Courts and such things, and to renew friendships formed during long service in Shanghai, a type of friendship which is the most valuable' and lasting of all. It also gave an op- portunity to exchange views on the subject of occupation during re- tirement. There were some who could proffer advice as to how to
· grow" tomatoes by the ton. catch eels by the dozen, grow mushrooms ad lib, to produce, food and milk. but he was not aware that any member had gone in for distilling whiskey in order to reduce the cost of that hixury. Others who had served the Council as employees had now tolaed other councils as councillors which was very lau able.
