Munich, No. 9. Giving a graphic account of the state of the spiritual, moral and economie decay which existed in Germany in 1923 and which had prompted him to attempt the up- rising on November 9, Herr Hitler In a speech delivered in the his- toric Buergerbraeu tavern Friday night before the National- Socialist party's old guards amel which

Iste was published Saturday evening stressed that the yonderful thing was that men arose in the German nation who were not willing to capitulate but ready to oppose Germany's des- troyers not only with intellectual means at their command but even with their lives.

ON

Hitler then described in detail the early progress of the move- ment leading up to the attempted coup in 1923 and stated that its failure had brought to him the realisation that the fight for power in Germany must be conducted by legal methods. But the fact that the Natoinal-Selalist movement had attempted a revolution, he declared, was the secret ILOVE- ments of later success since the men with the revolutionary spirit were attracted to its ranks where- as others which had only preached the legality were joined by weak- lings and cowards.. That was the great service rendered by the fallen-their herole example.

TRIBUTE TO LUDENDORFT" In this connection. Hitler paid tribute to General Ludendorf who took part in the coup and whom Hitler had asked not to endanger his life by marching at the head of the column General Luden- dorfi had answered "I will march at the front" and had then taken the position in the front rank.

Hitler stressed that after the failure of the uprising in 1923 he bad realised only the possible line of action to be pursued in the future and that he had steadfast- ly followed this line for nine years. This had been made possible only by the coup and the men who had sacrificed their lives in it.

NEW WAR FLAG

The hoisting of the new war flag on Friday was the event of tremendous importance, continued the Chancellor, declaring that al- though the history of the German, people could be traced back 2,000 years, the nation had never had a uniform character in the form of the inner conviction and the ac- tual fact which it has to-day.

"For the Arst time since" the Germans had been in the world there is one nation, inhabited by one people. Imbued with one out- look on life," protected by one army, and all that under one fag."

declared Hitler amidst resounding applause.- Transocenn Run 3fim.

CAMBRIDGE GETS £10,000

FOR RESEARCH

To Develop Aeronautics

(Special Air Mail Service)

London. Oct. 17. The University of Cambridge has been expecting to vote to-morrow

upon a grace accepting with thanks an

offer from Sir John Siddeley of £10,000 for aeronauti- cal research. Such votes" are us- ually passed without question, and the fact that until the last moment opposition was expected calls for explanation.

and pu-

and the

The oner was made Lilihed early in July, Connell of the Senate then put forward a grace of acceptance to be voted on August 3. Just before this date ten resident members of the Senate, mostly of known Left wing sympathies, circulated a fly-sheet announcing their inten- tion of voting against the grace. It should be observed that such previous notice is required by the University constitution, which snap votes would make quite un- workable. All this was in "vaca- tion, and the Vice-Chancellor took“ the obviously right step of post- poning the vote, till. the Michael- mas term. This postponed vote is now upon us,

· OBJECTORS' REASONS The objectors' reasons were all of an anti-militarist character. They dilated upon the undesirabl- lity of Cambridge becoming "a centre of military research," and they asserted that it was, clear from Sir John Siddeley's letter to the Vice-Chancellor that "the primary object" of the gift was' "the subsidy of research of miki- tary character and of pecuniary value to armsment manufac- turers. Few would quarrel with the general sentiments thus ex- pressed: the weak point of the letter was the complete lack of evidence in support of its insinua- tions. Reference to Sir John Biddeley's letter showed that the offer was quite unconditional and that military research was not even hinted at

It has been rumoured that the real motive

was a feeling that money coming from an armament

manufacturer was irredeemably tainted but this suggestion is frreconcilable with the fact that the y-sheet did not ask for the rejection of the offer but only for the rejection of the grace as it then stood and still stands. Al that they asked was the addition of "the express proviso, that the Aeronautical Department should use the gift solely for fundamen=" tal research and for the improve- ment of civil aviation," "purposes, to which the signatories gave their "whole-hearted support." There seems no escape from the

conilusion that they believed that this University department was likely, unless expressly prohibited, to use the money for military purposes.

THE REPLY

all the circumstances it seems al- most certain that the Council' could have got A substantia. majority, and key that they would have got an overwhelming one.""

OPPOSITION WITHDRAWN

We shall, in fact, never know how the voting could have gone. for the signatories on Wednesday "evening announced their intention

of dropping their

opposition, on the strength of Professor Melvili Jones's assurances They-con- tinde, however, to stress the un satisfactory näture in their „view, of the present position, and, they NEW press for the appointment of a special syndicate to discuss "the whole question of military. commercial, and secret research" at Cambridge. It does not seem likely that such a syndicate will be appointed.
