Good Fare Provided For Week-end

(By "PIVOT”), „

"The return of the Chinese soccer teams to the soccer felds Just week naturally heightened interest in the rame and their followers were not disappointed either.

11

South China "A" last year's champion delighted - a -large crowd on the Navy ground by easily accounting for the Navy team by 6 goals to 3, while their "B" managed to force a draw against the Fusiliers much against the run of the play. The Chin- ene Athletic were unlucky to let East Lanes, get away with both points.

The standard of play during the week-end was high com- pared to other week-ends, and an unfortunate Incident marred the South China - “A”-Navy match when Cannell was given marching orders for alleged kicking against Tam Kong Pak who also came under the eye of the referee.

poorly supported. Higgins found th Syd Strange a very stubborn de- fender. The Club owed their suc-. cess to him and Fowler who played a dashing game to enable him to score both of the goals.

Lee Wai Tong as usual proved; who, did anything" useful but was his versatility by scoring the "hat trick" and was also responsible in a big way for the other three goal. They were quick to seize opportunities whenever offered, and their ability to shoot and pass was mainly responsible for their vic- tory.

The Navy forwards were weak and licked cohesion as a whole. Anywhere near goal they were un-

ble to do the right thing. Given chances time and again they just "about throw them to the wind

when the forwards were unable to cope with the situation which de manded instani action. Their de- fance did a good day's work but was somewhat overrun by the hippy Chinese: HUATHLETIC SURPRISED

The Athletic-E Lancs. gumie was fast and exciting. It was a ding dong" affair right along. Both aldes dominated play at diffrent stages of the game and in the first half the soldiers lost изпред chances in scoring when their for- words were palpably weak in front of goal Harmsworth's cleve: dia- play in goal in the second half Ilieraly put a stop to the Chinese dangerous attacks. He was here "there and everywhere at one time and the many dangerous shows di- rected at his' charge were ably turned away,

The Chinese were

awarded a penalty when North handled but Tang Kwong Sum's resultant spot kick went wide. After the Chinese had attacked for the greater part of the second half the soldiers made

a breakaway, and Layton caught the Chinese keeper un- aware with a drop shot from well up the half way line. The ball entered past the Chin.se goalie who up till now had played a very fine game.. The victory of one all somewhat flatcered the soldiers on the run of the game.

Yet another penalty was missed which might had been the deciding factor in the game had it been scored by the Fusillers in their match against 8, China "B" which however ended in a goalless draw.

The soldiers did well on the whole and once again the weakness of a forward line was very noice- able. The soldiers attacked for the greater part of the game but

found in Leung In Chan and Pau Ka Ping two stumbling blocks, the latter stopping everything that went his way between the sticks,

The Fusiliers as a team played better than the Chinese and should have won. Their defence was on top most of the time but was un- able to get their forwards going. Rowlands as ustal was himself in goal and was ably backed up by his pair of hecks. Their insid trio" presented a small problem to the Chinese and had the Chinese defence harried, but withaj they Jost their shooting boots. The penalty awarded the soldiers to- wards the end of the first half was missed by Harrison who otherwise -pat in an excellent day's work.

FLASH IN THE PAN?

Is St. Joseph's College earlier form only. Just a flash in the pan? This I believe can only be answered oy the team itself: Against the RA (8) they went down by the odd goal in five. It was a very disappointing game the College boya played. No one seems to have caught the spirit of the game and seemed to be suffering from inertia. With the exception of Costa who played a really magni- ficent game and-ably-backed-up-by- Sinclair the rest of the team was much below the usual standard of a second division team,

The Ganners deserved their vic- tory as they were undoubtedly the better team of the two. played the better game and where

They

St. Joseph's lacked cohesion and understanding the soldiers more than made up for it by their cleverly conceived and well direct- ed movements. Gardiner. Lewis and Hunt were the pick of the de- fence while Barraclough and Forbes shone in the forward inc.

The Recreio had no difficulty in defeating the lowly placed R.A. (L) team by 6 goals to two. The Portugu ise boys were faster on the ball than the soldiers and their forwards worked with machine like precision. Alves on the left.

wing and B. Gosano in the centre forward berth played a great game. The Recreio's defence had the soidler cleverly bottled.

THIS WEEK'S ENCOUNTERS Seven senjor games are down for decision during the week-end, five on Saturday and the balance on Sunday. The games that will be the attraction will undoub.edly be the Club-S. China "A" clash on Saturday and the Chinese Derby- Athletic S. China "B" on Sunday. These two games will be the draw- ing power for the week-end but another excellent clash is to be found in the Recreto Fustiers Kame.

S. China has by their latest dis- play against the Navy been favour- ed to triumph over the Club, but the fact must not be overlooked that in the past the Club had al- ways been the thorn in the Chinese team's march to Championship. Of course there is no saying what will happen in a game of this calibre, and barring no unforeseen fact- denis South China "A" ought to win,

The absence of Chu Ah Fai and "Darkle" Chen from the Athletic's side last week wan sorely felt. Without their presence again this week their chances of beating the redoubtable 8. China "E" are very alim. Granted that the Athletic has a team in the making but I do not think they are able to stand

The Guardians of the law were only able to divide the spolis with the Kowloon team after the home team was given a gruelling first half, Following upon pressure by the Po-up against the fast and tricky B. 1lce forwards Johnstone scored a China "B" forwards. In all pro- lucky goal. This lead was short bability a draw might be the re

Kowloon put sumption

The on the screws and came back with re- Deated determined attacks. The equaliser came when D. Knox after a brilliant run down the wing sent in a perfect centre which Oppenhelm sent in past McHardy with a first timer..

Recreio-Fustillers game should provide soccer fans with an entertaining exhibition of soccer. Both teams are playing as well as over and the soldiers' heavier weight I think will not be much of a handicap to the Portuguese boys. Bandford and Co., will have to surmount a very severe obstacle in the Rec's defence, ably taken charge of by the redoubtable A, V: Gosano. Keneghan will have his

Last week

display at one stage should encounter little if any op- position from the weaken t Joseph's team.

Kowicon and Lincolne should in- dulge in a evenly contested game handi full in policing, B. Gosano but I think the pendulum will and his men and whatever the re-swing in favour of the soldiers by sult might be a grand game will virtue of their superior tactics in

The game was very hotly con- t:sted throughout. The Police de- fence in fact both defences played a very able game and the result was a fair inleation of play.

The Hong Kong Football Club defeated the Lincolns by the odd goal in three in a very disappoint-be the outcome. ing affair. Both teams were not playing up to past standards. Ridley was about the only soldier

attack.

Navy should get away with both East Lancs, should obtain both points from the R.A. (L) while their points from R.A. (8) on Police although putting up a sorry Sunday.
