EARLY NEWS FROM THE WAR FRONTS

Desperate Resistance By Ethiopians

Addis Ababa, Oct. 5. Adowa which was reported captured by the Italians on Satur- day morning is still in the hands of the Abyssinians according to the latest reports. Whether the Itallaas failed in the attempt to storm the town or were partially successful, and then were driven out again by the Abyssinian forces is not quite clear at the present juncture.

There is no doubt that a desperate battle is going on for the possession of the city and It is questionable how the Abyssinians, though fighting with conspicious bravery, will be able to resist the Italian onslaught supported by artillery, tanks and other modern weapons, much longer.

The Italian forces advancing! from the North against Acows on a front of 65 kilometres are said to amount to 100.000 men and appar- ently have been taken by surpriss by the strength of the resistance of the Abyssinians which was not expected at this stage.

Heavy losses evidently have been Euffered on both sides, unconfirmed

reports putting them as high as 1:200 to 2,000. The report of the capture adjacent town of Adigrati is unconfirmed, the latest reports from the fron stating that the Italians only reached · Havriat, which is one day's march from Adigrat, and" where the Abys- sinian, despite continual bomb at- tacks by Italian planes, are stil holding the Italian forces at bay.

Westward of Adown, the Italian vanguard is reported to have gain- ed about seven kilometres. In the course of the day, and seem likely that the town of Axum will soon be in their hands, this has not already occurred.

IN THE SOUTH

In the South the Italian Army which invaded the province of Ogaden from Italian Somaliland with the object of reaching Harrar and join up with the Eastern Army advancing from the mountain of

sinian troops, Recording to the latest reports received here. Desperate fighting is going on for the possession of Adigrat in the district of Agame, this town forming the key position for the capture of Adowa. The Abyssinians established themselves. in smal groups in the mountains and are conducting a guerilla warfare which is proving a great obstacle tu "the Italians. The "command, therefore, has been given to the troops to move forward with the greatet caution. The Italians have already lost much material and many men as prisoners, according to the Abyssinian reports which add that the Italians are appar- ently trying to effect a break in their lines in Adowa and Axum with tanks and airplanes in order to encircle. ADOWA SURROUNDED

Rome, Oct. 5.

The fate of Adowu according to the latest dispatches" is still un- decided, the Abyssinian troops - der Ras Seyum have suffered severe losses. Adowa is now almost com- pletely surrounded by Italian troops so that the Abyssinian post- tion is becoming more and more critical. Ras Seyum appears there- fore to be making plans to evacu- ate.
