Recent research into the pro- blems of wireless transmission by short waves has resulted in a considerable advance in the art o building short wave wireless transmitters for worldwide com- munication, and particularly for ship-to-shore working, so that 13 now an everyday occurrence for vessels in any part of the world to communicate regularly, with their home country on short

waves.

In order to improve the faci- litles for Italan vessels to keep in touch with their own country from all parts of the world, the "Italian Ministry of Communica- tlons recently decided to increase the the existing equipment at wireless station of Coitano by the provision of a new Marconi_type with * short-wave transmitter wave-range of 13-100 metres and this hus now been installed at Coitano far this service.

The latest refinements of short- wave transmitting technique par- to high tieanly with regard quality of speech and constancy the transmitted wave, pave of been incorporated in this instal. lation.

The output of the transmitter to the ueria reeders is 56 kilo- watts maximum un continuous wave telegraphy and 35 kilowatts on telephony at 80 per .modulation, and is, therefore, one of the most powerful of its kind. in the world

SCOTS MODELS ENTERED

For Engineering Exhibition

London, Sept 10. Scotland has an increased re- presentation this year at the 'mo- to be dal Engineer" exhibition opened by Sir Josiah Stamp pre- sident of the LMS, Rallway, in the Royal Horticultural Hall, Westminster, on Thursday. Sep- tember 19.

Among the entries from Scot- lapd, several promise especial in- submitted by Mr. Moirton J. Cowie terest. A most ingenious one is an architect, of 30 St. John's Car storphine, Edinburgh.

It is a in, to a foot scale model of a naval picket boat carried by HMS. Hood Built by him in somewhat limited spare time over a period of two years, he utilised all kinds of odds and ends in a clever manner. ›

ODDS AND ENDS The funnel top was fashioned from the nozzle of a garden syringe: the funnel base from part of a brass bed-knob; hatch hinges are tie-plus: handrail stanchiona are earrings and tle-pin binges; scuttles, brass washers; whistle base, part of a pot-hook; bollards curtain-rall wire; and a gun ring, an alarm clock balance wheel.

Mr. Alan E. Forbes, Linthorpe, King Edward Street, Fraserburgh, has built a rortary steam engine, mounted on bed-plate, to drive model twin-screw destroyers through reduction gearing. The GREATER CLARITY The speech response or ine new. engine has developed 10,000 r.p.m.

at 50lb. per square inch. a high order installation is a and, in fact, is equivalent to that ot a motebroadcasting station. a line base within plus ** mi o decibels over a band of 50-10,000 cycles having been arranged.

It has, in the past, been cus- tomary to restrict the speech channel for telephony to a much smaller band, but the provision of a very wide speech response is of particular value in view of the added clearness and inter gibity of the transmitted word which results.

There is the additional advant age that such a service is also available for the transmission of musical programmes."

An Important feature of the new installation at Coltuno is the provision of four spot-waves which can be selected practically instantaneously by means of turn-table mechanism which brings into cireuit appropriate tuning inductance and condensers so that * minimum of time is Cost when conditions necessitate a change of wavelength.

UNIFORM AERIALS Specia, care has been taken in the stablisation of the transmit- ter, and two of the four spot-

oscillato waves have a master with a stability of one in 50,000. The other two have a stability of one in 20.000, so that in this respect the equipment fully.com~ plies with international legisla→ tion.

The whole of the installation is contained in four compact, completely enclosed blue.cellulos ed cabinets, which are placed 'n- line. A control tables in front of the four units is used for star- fing up the different machines which supply the power. Every part of the equipment is easly accessible in accordance with mo- dern transmitter design.

Four vertical "uniform" aerials are employed, each for a different wave length. These are connect- ed

by with the transmitter copper concentric feeders. The changeover from one aerial the other is made by remote con- trci from the transmitter hall,"
