How Colour Can Transform

The Mode

SKILFUL TREATMENT IN CONTRASTS

The greatest charm of this new season les in e.lour. Tné beauty of texture in the autumn fabrics has influenced the result, for the dyer and weaver work in harmony, with the most satisfactory results. It is the blending of wool 'and silk flecked with metal or other Threads of contrasting fibre that mukes possible the alliance of un- usual shades. Twenty to twenty-. five years ago the majority of colours were presented in cloths and silks of harsh Anish, which often spelt disaster!

or

We get a wide choice in both colour and fabric, for a contin- uous range in every shade is fea- tured. Designers realise that velvet takes on a certain shade that looks different in satin silk, so they blend the tones to- gether to create these gradual shadings that are so beautiful in

becoming modern fashion,

to wear, and permit of every col- our, sulting all types.

ALLIED WITH BLACK

Some enlours, Including 'blends and en rasts, are specially stres- sed and skilfully treated Black and brown are both of 'primary importance in wool. Green, from grey-olive to the familiar bottle. is very smart and lends itself to that touch of black braiding or astrakhan that is a factor in the new tailleur,

BLACK CREPE-SASH

Gail Patrick, has just intro- duced a striking dress, modelled for her by Travis Banton. in "The smart Giri,'

It is a classic daytime dress of flat crepe in black, with a high neckline and a new version of Codice fullness. The dress is bias cut-with the usual finttering effect and round the waist a wide sash of the black crepe *18 knottea

COOLNESS IN BROWN

The coolest. smurtest suit in Hollywood at the moment is one worn by Gertrude Michael. It is carried out in dark brown crepe, 'spattered with toy, white em- broidered stars, and has a castial neckline.

H

With the suit Miss Michael wears a white belt and sandala and abroad-brimmed brown straw hat with a shallow crown worn square across the head.

A grey-green cloth made a hip- length coat, with plastron of braided frogs in green and black down the front and a narrow edg- ing of black astrakhan. This is worn

over a short but "trim-slit skirt, complete with a beret and bag of the same cloth.

Ancther, and more striking, al- llance, with black is a deep shade in scarlet. An all scarlet hat in felt looked well completing a black The ensemble of Melton-cloth.

coat was cy long half-length, with "a small cape attached at the back

lined with scarlet ottoman.

A

The contrasting lining in bright colour is another smart re- vival. Further dashes of colour are provided by gloves of velvet or suede that match hat and hand-bag, which will cheer up fashi-n this winter.

"}

Italian blues and reds are best reserved for evening. For day wear, the best models are still in either black, brown ur some equal- ly sober shade,

A good idea for tailor-mades are striped skirts with plain wool coats. Striped black and grey. brown and mustard, or dark red and misty blue, look attractive with well-tailored jaunty little coats carrying out the woollen "idea in al-black, all-brown and

dark-red, or in any suitable col-" our contrast.

NEW AUTUMN MODELS

Travis Banton, Paramount de- signer, is completing his new autumn models for such atars as Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Ca- role Lombard. Claudette Colbert and Loretta Yeung.

His chief concentration has been on the spirit of movement. For daytime he achieves this by the use of skirts pleated all the way round, and his leaning is to- wards baggy tops for dresses and coats. For sportswear he is trim- ming tweeds and various woollen fabrics with leather in easily manipulated versions of suede. kidskin and pigskin

Formal evening wear will in- clude more of the full chiffon gowns favoured at the moment. Banton

designed has already several of these for Katherine DeMille, who appears in The Crusades. He has also concent- rated on voluminous metal and taffeta models as well as count- less versions of the draped dress.

NAMED AFTER STARS Less fur is used in the collars and cufts of Banton's new models but it is prominent in the linings for wraps--daytime and evening.. One all-important note, however, is that chiffon evening gowns will be trimmed with fur. He has just designed one for Carole Lombard to wear in her next picture

Hands Across The Table. This is carried out in belge chiffon with a trimming of sable,

Colour will be the most import- ant thing in autumn and winter "fashions, says Banton. The new trend will follow themes which express the particular emotional" quality of each star. so that wo- men will be able to wear the col- our of their favourite players. It is inevitable that there will be a- tremendous vogue for such col- ours as "Mae West green," "Col- bert brown.". "Dietrich bluè,". "Lombard yellow," and so on.

TAILORED SUITS AHEAD

Tailored suits still head the popularity list of Hollywood fas- hions. Joan Bennett is wearing a charming modèl in pale pink kilk linen. A dark brown blouse left unbuttoned at the throat, goes with it and a straw hat in brown, and brown and white sports shoes complete a fascinating ensemble:

Sleeves In Great Variety

FEATURED IN AUTUMN DISPLAYS

...

According to important Paris designers it wr depend upon individual taste whether slender wrap-to coatlines will carry vo- lume in wide sleeves, or whether caped

coats will show sleeve widths reduced into short and longer narrow envelope lengths, Wide sleeves in alm-line over-

ats may be substituted for those of average tailored width, but no sleeve is better than adding to the swaying volume of the latest hip and half-length caped coat.

The smart cape-line shows a wrapover fastening reversed from front to back. Some of these fronts are firms closed; others button A short way down the centre front from collarless neck- lines. Shoulders are fitted nati- rally, and frequently are given e little extra, breadth. but this subtle and not exaggerated.

Envelope sleeves turn these "capes into swagger ccat-lines and are practical with entirely closed fronts and without even forearm slottings. These sleeves are set between folds when of short. length from elbow to wrist, they

may be longer and beneath shoulder fittings.

Providing cutlines are slender volume in sleeves not only looks excellent, but extremely dashing. elther matching in woollens, vel- vet.. or fur. The success of this silhouette is assured in overcoats which may be buttoned across on the figure, beited. or. as one designer suggests, lashed to the waist by wo""en cable rope ties. The full bishop sleeve-line caught in at wrists is an important trend that has supp'anted the leg o' mutton type to a great extent. This continues,. but in lesser de Kree, with more gender widths out tops often flattened across the upper arm by a series

winter fashions be of. lainage or silkeh fabrics outine is of primary im portance, with cleverly construct - ea surface movements and well- chosen details:

POWDER BLUE FOR

DIETRICH

Blue, of course, is Marlene Diet- rich's favourite colour, and the star wears as many dresses in this colour as she can.

The star was wearing a powder blue sports frock which buttoned straight up the front. The but- tons up to the knee; however, were left unfastened and Marlene was stockingless and wearing a smart pair of white sandals. Her hat was a large, cartwheel of imp navy blue straw.

SYLVIA SIDNEY'S NEW COIFFURE

Bylyin

Hidney will be geeli shortly with an Edwardian colf- fure, which-sweeps up from the 'neckline and is pinned into a cluster of curls on the back of the head. Sylvia wore this type of hairdress in one of her pictures and thought it too dramatic-- but now it is becoming the fan- hion.
