NIGHT AND DAY THE BLUEBIRD

Round The Salt Lake Bed

Theoretically, all the records. and they are many, which have the International Association's sanction are of equal importante, are equally the nest performance yet achieved. Practically, it is far otherwise, for there is a glam- cur about certain historic gures, the - maxim speed over the kilometre or the mile-though the mile somehow is not quite the same-the.. maximum distance which can be put into one hour, and then the total distance for one day of twenty-four hours,

Those are the things that thrill while the speeds for 500 kilometres, or three days or for ten miles seem to be mere matters of interest only. Quite why this is so gen- erally, It is difficult to say, but in racing circles, the reason is ob- vious, for in. all three it is known that the car and man will have to be stressed to the utmost, and each record is coveted as a miles- Stone in progress which will remain

et historic interest.

To Carry Camera

When an aeriplane attacks the litude record it carries with it a sealed instrument which auto- matically records the maximum height attained, but when Sir Malcolm Campbell breaks the land speed record there is no means, of ascertaining, afterwards. the ma- ximum readings of his instru- ments. Sir Malcolm finds that. even a fleeting glance at his re- volution, counter when travelling at his highest speed is extremely hazardous and unsatisfactory. At his last attempt he came in. after breaking the record at: 273 m.p.h.- odd, expecting to have recorded an even higher speed, but revolu- tions of the engine which he was taking as a guide, had given him fale impression owing to the speed lost in whel alip.

If possible he needs to check accurately the amount of alip, as indicated by the timed speed com- pared with the engine revolutions reached, without having to look at his Instruments at all. "The idea of a recording needle to stay in position on the rev counter at the highest point reached was dis- carded, and the elaborate appar- atus described here was finally adopted and has been built into the car

The Duke of Kent, It will be recalled, also bought a Kashmir sapphire for the engagement ring which he gave to Princess Marina, but this was emerald cut.

John Cobb's run in America for rne twenty-four hours is, like his hour record, something out of the common in the world of record Breaking. The car in one sense of the phrase is a "freak "--that is. it is not the product of a particu- lar frm of motor car manufactur- ers; it is an aeroplane engine in a special chassis. It is not 1ma- chine as a result of which special data can be obtained which would be helpful in future motor ear de- velopment, but it is a car produced as a result of the conditions of the modern world, for it was made for Cobb, who wanted to break re- words, and it was made in the least expensive manner possible in the circumstances by the famouscouraged, so the whole apparatus arm of engineers at Brooklands

is enclosed in a massive oak bax; measuring 3ft. by 8in. by 10in, At one end is set the special instru-with a little painting thrown in ment board holding a clock, re-by way of recreation. volution counter, and oil and supercharger pressure gauges. At- the other is set the modifted Cine- Kodak,

track, familiarly known as "To. and T's," but more correctly as Thomson and Taylor,

TYRES THE CHIEF PROBLEM Now whereas the ordinary rac mg cur tends to be fragile as to its engine, so that there 18 per petual worry as to whether the power unit will stand up to the work, in the case of the Napler- Halton the engine is really doing very little work, and it is not, und never has been, a source of worry, however long the record. The chassis, it is true, has relatively more to do, but the problems to be solved as to its construction are reasonably well known and not too difficult co solve. Far was it with the tyres, for whereas the light racing car travelling at the speed of the Napler-Rallton is not a very dificult problem from the tyre manufacturer's point of view, the design of tyres for a two- ton machine travelling at 150 m.ph. is anything but easy, and it was: moreover, made much more complicated because the ctrent was an unknown quantity..

otherwise

It was thought that the dried bed of that lake could not be very severe on tyres, but that is nothing much to go upon, and a tyre tread that will stand Montlhéry, Brook- lands, or European road circuits might be utterly destroyed quickly

by the surface

on which the Napler-Rallton had to travet; and though when that surface was perfect the tyres were little harm ed, even then the unknown factor occurred when the intense heat mtde the surface unexpectedly slippery. Then, again, there was another interesting difference, for whereas the true racing car usually has to be supplied with some highly exciting form of fuel, the Napler-Railton could use a quite ordinary benzole mixture, and even the consumption of that is not unduly high, a point of con- siderable Importance, as special

fuels would be hard to obtain in Utah, and even the quantity of fuel available depended on the transport facilities.

A "KODAK" WEA

The whole idea was developed by the Kodak Company, and the camera is a beautiful piece of work. I can run for sixteen min- utes without reading the flim, which is twice the time of the s.andard camera. Beneath the camera has been added a aix-volt electric motor with the appro- priate gearing in front, this being Anished just as if it were part of the original. The base of the camera fits rigidly on to a two- point plug, which connects the. motor to the accumulator and also positions the lens exactly for focus

To start the camera, and to switch on the lights Sir Malcolm has a single switch on his cash- board, so that he need only bring the apparatus into action for the duration of the run, and need not change the film before his second run in the opposite dir- ecti:n. Special
