· FORECASTING AUTUMN FASHIONS

Gail Patrick, appearing in Para- mount's * Mississippi," wears 2 particular smart sult at the mo- ment a suit that forecasts the -trend of Autumn fashions.

Carried out in powder blue wool crepe. It is trimmed with platinum fox and worn with grey suede gloves, shoes and dag. To com- plete the blue and grey colour scheme, Gail wears a grey stitched fabric hat with a perky little starched. Tell.

Two evening gowns worn by Miss Patrick show unusual design and colouring. One is in black and gold, with a train. Also long tight sleeves and a lavish embroidery of gold thread combine to add dis- dinction to formality. A jacket of gold lame completes the ensemble. Burgundy lace over satin is the motif of the other gown, and wide scarf attached to the should- ers gives the model versatility. Gall will wear this gown in Walter Wanger's Paramount production, "Smart Girl." with Ida Lupino and Kent Taylor.

BARLEY WATER FOR

BEAUTY"

For years doctors have testitied to the health-giving properties of barley" water. And this year, the .experts who spend their time con- sidering ways and means for the improvement und care of the com- plexion are recommending it strongly as one of the few short- cuts to the achievement of a clear skin.-

It is especially valuable in hot weather, for its cooling properties prevent complexion troubles aris- ing from overheated conditions.

.

The old-fashioned method of making barley water from pearl barley took a good deal of time. The powdered barley shortened and simplified the proceeding, and now the firia responsible for the barley power I have in mind have produced a ready-made barley water and lemon water combined. All you have to do to the "pre- paration is to pour a little into a glass and all it up with plain or soda water-not, if you are con- sidering your beauty, Iced. And there you are provided with a drink which has the blessing of both doctors and beauty specialists,

THE CRUSADES INFLUENCE

Travis Banton. Paramount de- signer, is creating more and more gowns on ines suggested by the 12th century clothes warn in Cecil B. DeMille's latest Paramount spectacle "The Crusades coming

to the Queen's Theatre shortly.

He has just designed a beautiful model for Helen Mack, who ap- pears in Paramount's "Fou Hours To Kill." It consists of a long white robe, modelled in the utmos simplicity, with a brief shoulder cape of cardinal red velvet, and a gold. silken eord knotted around the waist. The hat which goes with the model is a tricome in red-velvet and a tiny muff of dark mirik skirm'adds a note of frivolity.

FRIVOLOUS EVENING

GOWN

Frivolous and essentially femin- ine is a pink crepe informal even- ing gown worn by Ida Lupino, who is featured in Paramount's "Paris Love Song" and "Smart Girl”.

Thesi antelope skin garments are most becoming; much more so than ordinary leather parti- cularly in black. They are so suave and pleasant, bob to the eye and to the touch.

Among other things in the same collection-is uight green kid blouse, thin as a glove and as sup- pie.

The frilled neckline of the any telope cape is one which is fre- quently seen in blouses and on lit- tle dresses."

Such details correst the military styles which mark so many tailor- mades and dresses this season. Epaulettes, braided fronta, springy basques, brass buttons-all these show clearly a miliary influence, but not one is allowed to domini-,. ate.

Every stiff line is softened

to it the womnanilness which is now the leading note in fashion.

You may say that the divided skirt and the trouser skirt are perilously near to the masculine. Molyneux has the idea that wo- men will like to wear bright gloves this autumn, so he is putting elbow length suede gloves, in such colours as blue, red, green and amber, with black evening frocks of crepe and velvet.

The latest thing in the Autumn overcoats has just been designed for Grace Bradley,

It is in navy blue, is double breasted in style and has the ex- tremely wide lapels that are going to be such a feature of Autumn styles.

Patou has maile some of the lovelient evening dresses of the season. In different shades of -mauve, purple, violet, he hany

SKIRTS

There are longer, tighter skirts, and for afternoon long skirts to the feet, worn with every kind of blouse, bolero or Jacket you can think of. The skirts are usually black, and, in velvet or satin, or broadcloth Mtum

Mainly About Shoes

To buy largely at the end of the season too ofum means that you have bought nothing but re- grets, Buying small, however, in the way of distinguished sundries, can easily mean creating an all- the-year-round appearance of well-thought-out chic which looks as if it had cost very much more then it bas.

The two great 8's, a.ockings and shots, are most certainly worth concentrating on.

Designers are at last reallasing tha &5 women walk, so much wester' without high heels, and smle so much more easily if their fee: are truly comfortable, it is Just as well to provide reasonable fo.twear with good looks.

There are clever combinations of kid and su:de, ingenious straps which give you support where you need it and contrive to make the foot look smaller at the same time Square toes and round toes are both used; and you can choose between a long vamp which is carried well up on to the instep, and a very short one which lea- ves most of the foot exposed. The shape of your foot and the pur- pose for which you need the shoe are the determining factors.

SPORTS MODELS

There are some lovely new sports shoes. One of them is all mediaeval and romantic in ap- pearance, owing to the fact that the upper is made all of one place of leather; but essentially modern in comfort and balance. You can have it in navy blue with a red tongue; in beige with a brown tongue or vice versa, and in black with a white, tongue.

Another has a slightly higher Je, at comfortably moderate heel. It is an excellent acquisition for summer weather because of the punching in mackerel bands which increases its coolness as well as its decorative effect.

MODERN HAIR-BRUSH

A modern amenity which can do a great deal to keep hair in good condition is the hairbrush with d lachable bristles. These are set in rubber, in much the same way as in the hairbrush. many of us have known and sword

by for years.

In this case, however, the rub-

Ver and bristles slip out of the back so that they can be washed every day if necessary, and without

any danger of water collecting in- side and doing damage.

Ebony or white woods, and blue. peach or green enamel are all available, so that it should be easy to find one which will not quarrel with your other toilet things, and the price is very mo- derate.
