FESTIVAL

"Some Are Happy”

Our Chinese friends In the Colony to-day will again cele- brate the Mid-Autumn or the Moon-Cake Festival, as in prev- Jous years, but owing to the acute trade depression the festivities lacked some of the "good cheer of the previous years.

The big department stores and shops will make" a display with hundreds of electric lights, and lanterns of different colours and designs will be displayed by the majority of Chinese residences in the Colony.

According to the lunar calen- dar. this festival fails on the 15th day of the "8th moon, and the general display of lanterns is the reason for its being styled the "Feast of Lanterns" by the foreign visitors.

Many ignorant Chinese women worship the Fairy Goddess. Sheung Ngor, of the Moon, dur- ing this festival. but education has now put an end to this su- perstitious belief.

The Chinese colebrate this fea- tival by feasting and cating moon-cakes and seasonable fruits, and the hotels and restaurants will undoubtedly be well-patron- ized..

Formerly, the leading restaur- ants of the Colony did a profit- able business by exporting moon- cakes to the overseas Chinese in the different colonies. but owing to trade depression, the trade in moon-cakes S
