Improved Daimler

Fifteen

Five new models in the Dalmier Lanchester range are announced. One of these is a Daimler, and the others Lanchesters. The Daimler is the popular Fifteen. which has been in production for the past three years und is pro bably the most successful model that Daimlers have brought out.

The 6-cylinder engine" has dimensions of 63.5 and 105 mm., and although the chassis is the same dimensionally as before a number of important improve- ments have been made, chiedy to the suspension, the steering and the design of the front part of the chassig La all there are eight models, ranging in price from £485 to $600. The front springs of the Fifteen have been made longer and more supple in order to bring their periodicity, nearer to that of the rear springs and thus to reduce fore-and-aft movement as much as possible. The steering is now of the worm and nut pattern, and the column Is adjustable for length from the driver's seat. The new. Daimler Light Twenty was announced in The Times on July 12 last, and the special independent asembly of the radiator and front wings, has been applied to the new. Flt- teen. Equipment now includes centralized automatic chassis lub- rication and easy jacking facilit les built into the chassis.

The coachwork of the Fifteen has been redesigned, the standard saloon having a swept tall con- caling the spare wheel. In all models the

line lower waist mould.ng is downswept to the back. Room and weight are saved by the use of tubular framing for the separately adjustable front scats, The tendency in British body design towards greater beam 1s to be commended, and is cer- tainly necessary in view of com- petition from abroad. This Daim- Jer saloon has been appreciably widened. A new design of instru- ment panel which is neat and conduces to safety is built into the scuttle capping and incor- porates large diameter Instru- ment dials capable of variable Illumination. The fixed head coupe, has four windows instead of two, with new lines.

The Light Twenty now has a wider range of coachwork, there being seven models in all five new types having special coach- work. The standard saloon" costs. £675, and the sports saloon £695; the chassis costs £535. The Daim- ler Light Twenty is an unusually attractive car and silence and smoothness are among its char- acteristics...

LARGER ENGINES

New Lanchester Models

There are again three Lanches- ter models the Ten. Light Six, and Eighteen.

The 1936 Ten and Eighteen have engines of larger cubic capacity than hitherto-1444 c.c. instead of 1203 c.c. in the one case and 2560 c.c. Instead of 2390 c.c. in the other. The increase of power gives a better performance, and al- though the rating is increased, though very slightly, this is more than justified by the lower scale of taxation now in force.

Despite its larger engine the Ten standard six-light saloon- of new design with a swept tall- is reduced in price to £295 from £325. Like a new four-door fixed head coupe and the sports saloon it has the new style tubular-fram- éd front seats, which, while at least as comfortable as the seats hitherio used are lighter in weight and occupy less floor space.

Two distinct types of the Light Sk áre now offefed, térmed stan- dard and do luxe. The first 18 practically the Ten chassis and body work with a 1378 - c.c. six- cylinder engine, reduced prices running from £340 for the saloon.

The de lux version has a dif- ferent, chassis, which, apart from dimensions, corresponds with the Daimler Fifiéen. It has numer ous refinements, such as the bio-in easy jacking system, new type directly visible instrument board with large dials and con- trolled intensity illumination. wider body, adjustable steering column, and enclosed spare wheel. With eight different kinds of bodywork, including a střèamlined salon, prices range from £375

As mentioned. the Eighteen Lanchester has an appreciably.

A DRINK WHILE DRIVING

"Can a man, be mechanically drunk but soc.ally sober."

Mr. Isaac Foot (Lib., Bodmin} put this poser to the House of Commons.

It must be so, he said, if the findings of the British Medical Association Committee which had been considering the use of al- cohol in Yetition to thotór driv- ing, were true...

"If they are true-sald Mr. Foot, "we have to alter our whole con- ception of the problem of dealing with this peril of the toad."

"Any attempt on the part of the Ministar of Transport to deal with this peril which ignores these findings is bound to be in- adéquate and futile”

"FALS CONFIDNECE

Mr. Foot said that the signific. aace of the report was that it said that the dangers of the roads were no, the danger of what was usually called the drunken man but of the man in charge of "a dangeroits machine who had taken sufficient alcohol to give hum false conndence.

The tes.s which were being ap- plied in the courts of law were, therefore, inappropriate, and ir- relevant

If the facis in the report were scientifically true, there was a great responsibility on the Minis- ter of Transport and his depart- ment and upon the House of Commons to see that these facts were made known' tu all concern- ed.

larger engine, but otherwise it is substantially unchanged relative to the design of this greatly im- proved version, introduced last year, of the original Eighteen. Prices also are practically un- changed," and there is again à wide cholas of body styles, some Lanchester-built and some the production of coachbuliding spe- cialsts

All models again have the Daimler fuld fywheel transmis- sion.

They should be brought to the notes of avery, magistrate and nr every persuit who took on the road a highly dangerous machine, It they were untrue let them by dis- proved

Mr. Foot said he would have thought that the man most pager to publish the report would have ween the Minister. He was amaz- ed when he learnt that no action of the kind was to be taken.

If the facis stated in the report were fully understood throughout- the todhts and acted upon a substantial reduction in those killed and injured on the roads would be effected.

HIGHWAY CODE

Capt. Hudsoni. Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry .of Transpoft, said that Mr. Hore- Belisha was taking serious con- sideration, of the report.

Between the time the report was asked for and the time it was received there had been inserted a reference in the highway Code urging motorists to see that their alertness and sense of caution were not affected by alcohol.

that Captain Hudson added they saw no reason, there being no general demand why the tax- payers should be asked to pay for the republication of this report. Publicity had been given in the Press.

There was one really important sentence, the kernel of the re- port, that a driver after taking alcohol might belleve himself tó be driving better though his body worked less efficiently..

There was another thing that caused accidents-fatigue. »

Did Mr. Foot want only certi fed teetotallers to be allowed to drive? Total prohibition would not be popular in this country.

Action might have to be taken by the Ministry about fatigue, especially with drivers of heavy vhicles, but the people of this country were becoming more so-

by education and public opin- ton, which was the right way, of dealing with this problem.
