FORECAST OF ITALY'S

ATTITUDE

No Compromise At League Council Meeting

(Special to the "Hong Kong Dally Press“ (Copyright)A

Rome, August 30,

An Indication of the uncompromising attitude which can be expected on the part of Italy at the League meeting on Sep- tember is provided by the Italian press comments on Thurs- day evening on the resolutions passed at Wednesday's cabinet council at Bolzano. All the papers stress the impossiblilty of put- ting civilised Italy on a par with ' wild” Abyssinia, let alone applying sanctions for the first time since the League was founded against ...” a "modern progressive state" on behalf of a “barbarons land."

The "Giornale d'Italia," after detailing the Infringements al- - legedly committed by Abyssin's, adds that the Italian right to expansion in 'Abyssinia' cannot be satisfled by peaceful methods or diplomatic negutlations. Therefore the Italian procedure is to act in defence, not "aggression. \

The "Lavoro Fascista” concludes a long article by extoling - the Italian policy which it states had always been characterised by moderation and conclilation by saying that Fascist Italy will demand from the League the recognition of its right and sa- credness of the work which it has begun. ·

"There is only one solution now: military occupation and political control of Abyssinis by Italy, says "Tribuna,” adding that the con- clusion of the present dispute without bloodshed would be inter- preted by the whole world as victory for Abyssinia.",

Stockholm, Aug. 30.

The whole of the Swedish nation was plunged into mourning by the tragic end of Queen Astrid of the Belgians who was struck down in the full prime of her vigour in her Royal work of administering im- provement of the life conditions of the people over whom she had been called to reign.

Before her marriage, Queen Astrid had enjoyed the popularity of the whole of Sweden, the two countries having since been drawn closer together. When the dis- tressing news was wirelessed yes-
