You and I believe that men can be, and need to be re-born other men. The heathen needs to be converted. The flagrant sinner
needs to be reformed in short "Ye must be born again" is just ..he sart
of home-truth Brother Soandso needs to be told.
The same was true in our Lord's ministry. The fifteenth chapter of St. Luke's Gospel begins by telling us that the Pharisees and the scribes murmured saying ***This man receiveth sinners." They were used to the dulet company of res- pectable worshipper'a ·ព the synagogue listening to their own orderly instruction about the Law: Here they
found Jesus in the
marketplace with a godless rabble hanging on His words Men whose life was merely a scramble' for ill- gotten gain had left their coun-
ters to listen. Women had crept out of the back door of brothels "All the publicans and the sinners were drawing near unto Him for to hear Him." This group of res pectable citizens stood OR the fringe of the crowd, listening but, apart.
Their first thought had been that: i was a strange crowd: "He"xe- Calveth sinners." As they listened their thought changed: it was the right crowd. It was sinners, not respectable folk like themselves that this Prophet ought to receive. For His message was about the lost, the fallen, the prodigal. and who buh such should hear?
Let us join them on the fringe of the crowd. The most regular churchgoers have the habit of sit ting at the back. And here in the marketplace we should find our selves most naturally with them. For they were the regular, respect able, religious section at His hear- ers:
