THE ITALO-ABYSSINIAN DISUPTE
What Will Britain Propose?

Paris, August. 14.
"Mr. Anthony Eden arrived here yesterday evening, and will have his first conversation with M. Laval, the French Premier, at 11 o'clock to-day.
"Le Matin" expects that the conversation of the two states- men will reveal whether the British Government still is deter- mined to seek a solution of the Italo-Abyssinian problem by economic concessions to Italy exclusively, and still refusing to consider any settlement of a political nature" that may be de- manded by Italy.
It is unlikely that Britain will propose an investigation to- wards an eventual restriction of the Powers colonial possessions. "says "Le Jour" which likewise expects that Britain will submit "constructive plans" which will permit Italy to obtain far reach- ing and tangible economic concessions in Abyssinia.
The paper is, however, very sceptical whether such a settle-. ment is acceptable to Italy, since the Italian Government has re- peatedly stressed that it considers a political and military con- tro over Abyssinia is indispensable.--Transocean Kuo Min.

According to the "Enandal News" some anxiety is felt lest the unloading by speculators will be extended in the next few days in which case the vigorous sup- port of the American Treasury alone can prevent a complete col- lapse in the market.

In the opinion of the "Daily Telegraph, silver is synonymous In America with powerful political Interests. President Roosevelt is faced with a dilemma; he is not anxious to pay an unnecessarily high price though he knows that if he relaxes there will be heavy buying and the market will be demoralised.

He solves the problem by gentle and gradual lowering of the "buy

which took London completely by surprise, was responsible for the sharp fall in silver prices to-day.
London expected America tu continue to buy around 68 cents and therefore there was little change expected in the price, al- though it was known that the Far East was selling very heavily.
America confounded expecta- tions by refusing to buy at the fixing, except at much lower levels, which caused the spot price to fali three-sixteenths. After the fixing the Far East holders con- tinued to sell very heavily.
America commenced her opera tions by paying the rates asked. but gradually lowered her buying price, final quotations being about three sixteenths below the fixing.
