THE CANTON HANKOW
RAILWAY
Great Progress Made
DAWN OF A NEW ERA
Nanking, July 29.
A small pamphlet reviewing the progress of construction work on the Canton-Hankow line, written by Mr. H. H. Ling, Director and Engineer-In-Chief of the Chuchow-Shaochow Section of the line, gives the reader a good idea of the difficulties which have been encountered and surmounted in the course of building operations,
The linking up of Hankow with Canton has long been con- sidered an urgent need, politically as well as economically, so that the central part of China will be in direct touch with Can- ton, the great metropolis of the South. The first move for the construction of this rallway of 1,096 kilometres connecting two of the most important cities of China, with a population of nearly one million each, and passing through rich provinces with' an aggregate population of over ninety millions, can be traced a far back as 1896.
