It is learned that the 26,000-ton battleships are due for completion by the autumn of 1937. Britain is debarred by treaty from laying down any capital ship before Jan- uary, 1937. It would, however, be possible to invoke the "escalatar" clause," drafted to meet the con- tingency of some non-treaty Po- wer embruking on a big programme of warships, and to lay down capi- tal ships, cruisers, and other ves- se's immédiately after we had com- municated our intentions to the ] other signatories

The outery in France over the German programme seems to be unjustified. When this programme 's completed france will still have an immense preponderance of na- val strength, as the following table shows."

HOW THEY BENEFIT 14 The idea of the camp, the work "of which is closely supervised by Mrs. Young, Mr. E. Kelen, and other members of the committee, is to give the less fortunate child- ren of Shanghai the chance of a holiday in the sunshine and coun- try air. According to Mrs. Young, | many of the children who have been revelling in an orgy of sun- light, sleeping-outside, playing out- ! door games, cooking picnic meals over an out-door grill, and clamber- ing like monkeys in the "jungle" gymnasium” never have been out of the city before. One little girl. "Alleen,” gained 5 lb; during her two weeks? visiữ at the camp. An- other Ittle four-year-old, who answers to the name of “Mickey Mouse," is spending her second summer at the camp. Last year, she arrived at the camp weighing only 23 lb.

BIG FLOATING DOCK Germany is hurriedly completing a big floating dock, with a lifting capacity of about 30,000 tona, for use at the Wilhelms-baven base on the North Sea. When completed the dock will be about 830ft long. with an entrance width of some 1001. It has evidently been built to take the new 28,000-ton battle cruisers now under construction.

The largest floating dock yet built is that at the British Singa- pore base. It has a lifting capacity of nearly 60,000 tons.

SILVER JUBILEE FUND? Singapore Criticised"
