Averts A Tragedy

Kuala Lumpur, July 12.

...

The remarkable coolness of a Malay police sergeant in dealing with an armed man on the verge of amok narrowly averted a tragedy in Kuala Lumpur last night.

The unfortunate man, who is now under observation in hospital, was a Malay police constable quai- tered at the Birch Road "barracks. For no apparent reason he walked into the middle of Birch Road issuing a challenge to fight the world in general.

When European police officers came on the scene and tried to talk to him he produced a knife from his belt and shouted that he was going to "drink blood.""

STILL ARMED

The situation was saved by the sergeant, who happened to come from the same kampong. He went up to the man and by means of concillatory talk succeeded in per Buading him to walk two or three hundred yards down the road to a coffee stall in "Station Street. The man was muttering threats still and imprecations and was
