Government Reasons For Rejecting Proposals
WHOLESALE CONDEMNATION
London, July 21.
The Government's reasons for rejecting Mr. Lloyd George's "New Deal," proposals are given in detali in a sixteen thousand word statement giving their conskiered"reply on all points des- cribed in Mr. Lloyd George's proposals on "broad generalisations.” Asserting that in certain instances, the proposals might se- tually affect adversely the progress already made towards national recovery, the statement says that the general purpose of Mr. Lloyd George's plan is the same as the Government's, bat. the question is whether his method is well-conceived.
Finance need bé no obstacle to any sound, solid scheme, says the statement, but the proposed prosperity loan of £250,000,000 would involve serious financial dislocations and be deflationary in effect.

Causes Grave Concern In Italy
Rome, July 20,
Rumours that Italy had broken off her diplomatic relations with Abyssinis were denied by authoritative quarters on Saturday evening, but it is officially announced that the Italian Minister in Addis Ababa has" verbally protested against Emperor "Baile Selassio's speech before the "Parliament and he informed the Abyssinian Government that the Italian Government" are reserv- ing further decisions,
A statement emanating from, authoritativa, quarters stresse with special emphasis that the Emperor's speech created a grave situation and, that a serious view was taken here of the speech owing to its contents as well as its violent tone.
It is claimed that the speech was even more violent in the original Amharic text than in the French translation handed to the foreign Press correspondents in Addis Ababa.
The Fress maintains that any remaining prospects · for peaceful settlement of the dispute has been leopardised by this speech.---Transocean Kuo Min.
